Hi folks,

I’ve recently returned to fishing after many years absent and joined the BAA. I’m interested in trying some of the Pools for winter Roach and hopefully later in the season spring Tench. I wondered if anyone had some words of wisdom and advice on waters/tactics ?
Much appreciated!

Re: BAA Pools- Advice

Of the BAA pools I've only fished Apperley, Mythe and Uckinghall on a regular basis. None of them are easy, but that's the challenge!

I regard all 3 of them as Spring/Summer venues unless you're after predators, where Uckinghall is probably the best. I don't really fish for roach - so can't comment very well. Apperley definitely has a few, plus perch skimmers and bream. All 3 pools are good for tench on their day, but definitely early morning and evenings, mostly wasting your time in the middle of the day..

Big catches of bream possible from Mythe. Try as I might I can't get many bites from any decent tench or bream on the float there. Mostly feeder with corn, meat or pellet.

And all 3 pools have carp, I don't fish for them either, but reckon they're quite difficult to catch.

Don't expect a bite a chuck like commercials, but the rewards are there if you work for your fish.

Good luck!

Re: BAA Pools- Advice

I have only fished Uckinghall, Mythe and Coppice.

Roach aren't big players in either Uckinghall or Mythe, in my experience. Big bream, skimmers, perch, rudd and silver bream rule the roost, though Mythe has a significant head of carp and Uckinghall is well know for Preds. Lots of eels in both.

However Coppice did have a good head of medium to large roach which would be a pest in summer when targeting big bream and carp with luncheon meat on size 6 hooks! Last couple of visits there suggest that the silver fish population has dropped drastically but there are probably still enough there to be worth targeting. Coppice does produce fish in winter even in quite bad weather conditions, unlike the more "natural" stillwater fisheries.

If you want some good winter roach fishing then I would recommend the Staffs Worcester canal in the Kidderminster and Stourport areas. The Severn can be a formidable roach fishery in winter but you have to have steady river levels which we don't seem to be able to achieve this year.

Tench? They are my favourite coarse fish species but they are characters in Mr. Crabtree Goes Fishing as much as realistic targets these days. Uckinghall and Mythe both hold tench but they are a "niche market" and I've spent many summer's evenings after them with the grand total of two in the last five years, though I have had some nice examples of other species whilst trying. Maybe I've lost my edge!

Welcome to the BAA anyway, good to know some people are returning to angling.

Re: BAA Pools- Advice

Forgot to say, last time I went to Apperley, pool 2 the first one you come to, it was very overgrown. Hardly any fishable pegs apart from one armchair peg that sticks out into the lake on the river side of the pool.

But I've had the place to myself every time I've fished there, so not really a problem.

Last time out at Mythe the bailiff told me that the BAA had paid to have Apperley cleared and that all pegs were now accessible including a couple on the river

Hi Meatman,

On the matter of Tench (also my favourite course species) do you think that the difficulty in catching them is due to low stock or shy fish? If low stock could we ask the association for restocking of Tench to Coppice and Uckinhall? There are precious few good Tench waters in the midlands.

Re: BAA Pools- Advice

Certainly had tench at Uckinghall and fish there with a friend of mine. I tend to catch more bream and he has more tench. We both float fish but he fishes a bit closer in that me which may be the difference. Oh, and we fish next to the lillies which are always tench magnets.

Nothing complicated bait wise, sweetcorn and brown crumb and I put a few micro pellets for the bream.

Re: BAA Pools- Advice

Mythe pool has a very good head of tench. once warms up mixed bags of bream and tench are on the cards.
tin of sweetcorn has always been my top bait.
as stick says crumb and few micro pellets.
simple float set up off the platforms always good.
as with down birds meadow end. again float close in works wonders.
and dont fish too light, they not shy fish smiling

Now, that sound more encouraging!
Thanks for all the advice guys. Yorkie- i'll try some of the canals you suggested- any favourite baits I should try- bread, caster, pinkie?
Thanks for the Tench info Stick and Atlas. I'll be wetting the tench line later in the spring.

Re: BAA Pools and canals- Advice

Funkyflute- re baits on the canal: most baits work well.

If it's cold and clear, breadpunch is a good bet, you usually get a rapid response which is good if you are short of time. Caster is my usual choice if conditions are anything like at all. If there is heavy rain and the canal is coloured, fish maggot on the hook. Pinkies have worked well on the odd occasion I have used them. Chopped worm is a good back up if you are struggling, fish it close to bankside vegetation on your own side or across on the far bank, all species can be caught on the worm but perch are particularly fond.

The one thing that really puts the fish off on the Staffs Worcester is bright sunshine especially in winter when it's clear. When it's very cold, fish often don't show until the last 45 minutes before dark, but they rarely let you down.

Re: BAA Pools- Advice

200 lb of Tench it's start....but needs a lot more stock, and an Otter fence would be a good idea.

Re: BAA Pools- Advice

Agreed- 200lb = approx 60 fish. But we wouldn’t want it becoming a Tench Puddle. An otter fence would be good though.
