After many years fishing BAA waters for it's coarse fishing I've decided that i would like to give fly fishing a crack.
I have no previous knowledge of fly fishing whatsoever and was wondering if anyone could send me in the right direction to learn the art and catch some fish and whats the easiest set ups and easiest venues, (BAA or not) to learn how to fish on. Tuition prices online are really pricey so I was going to have a go at trial and error learning.

Any information would be greatly received

Many Thanks,

Adam

Re: Beginning Fishing

Probably the easiest way to start fly-fishing is in a small stillwater, there are a number of these around the Midlands and over into Shropshire and Welsh Borders. Ones I have tried include Delbury Hall and Onny Vale (both day ticket). I think some of the Packington complex are trout lakes. Bigger reservoirs are more challenging and even the heavily stocked ones can be hard to catch on at times but at least you usually have plenty of room. I quite like Draycote, bank and boat fishing is available there. Most of these fisheries have websites that provide prices and details, fishing tuition is available at some.

Fly fishing for trout in rivers is much more challenging but more rewarding when you get it right, BAA waters on the Teme and Upper Severn look good although I have never had the inclination to try them.

Hope you do take the plunge and have a go - I'm sure there are other game anglers in the BAA who would offer advice.

Re: Beginning Fishing

Thanks for the replies! i've been loads of times since this post and already learnt so much although the rivers are yet to be in a condition that I'd call near prime whilst I've been on them!

Re: Beginning Fishing

I think the advice to try to learn the basics on a Stillwater is good advice - you've got to have your casting skills sorted and know how to play a fish on light gear. I consider myself pretty competent on still waters - I fish Draycote and catch some nice fish, I've been fly fishing on still waters for 35 years but when I tried the Teme last year I really struggled. Main challenges were knowing which fly to use, my reservoir gear was too heavy and clumsy, and ability to present the fly naturally in the flow was a whole new level of skill. It was really challenging but I can see that it would be really rewarding when you land a fish. I had a couple of rises from about 100 casts. I was in the river with chest waders - there was no way you could cast from the banks - too overgrown. As it was I spent half my time recovering my flies from trees. But being in the water during the close season was really fun and I was learning by trial and error - just need to buddy up with someone who knows what they are doing. I'll try again in May when the Mayflies as hatching - 'duffers fortnight' might see me land a fish. Strangely though there were plenty of Duns hatching (see attached) but they weren't taking them. So if anyone has some tips on fly patterns - dries and nymphs - to use on the Teme in May, that would be very much appreciated.

Re: Beginning Fishing

Hopefully someone with more experience will give us some fly based advice! I'm quite glad that it seems difficult to fish the Teme as it sets a real challenge to aspire to for someone that has tried and conquered other times of fishing. Keep us posted on any trips you have!

Well that wen't down well... can't help as I don't fly fish. Just did a very quick count of replies on the first page on this site, over 10,000 views on a range of subjects, and just FIFTY or so could be bothered to reply.
I think the non fishing has had no posts for several weeks, we obviously have a lot of members judging the number views, so no excuses really.

Come on get those fingers walking ..smiling

Has it crossed your mind that maybe people just enjoy reading the posts? So what if they read one and don’t comment?Maybe they don’t have anything useful to add to the discussion?
How bored must you be to count the views on every post and moan if there isn’t enough for your liking?

If people don't post there is nothing to read is there ? With so many lurkers I would have thought a few might be tempted, perhaps they don't fancy a fight with my little Hheron?
Cheer up.

Sorry I have to agree with Stew on thos one. If people post on subjects they know nothing about, in my case fly fishing, how can I make a comment?

How has having to post this reply helped the original poster?

Re: Beginning Fishing

Not just this thread, it's all the others too, don't understand why there are so few replies, look at the views vs replies, quite staggering.
Of course double posts would skew the figures somewhat wink
