Caring for barbel in the heat

Thought I'd share this from the barbel society, for anyone fortunate enough to land a barbel in this current heat:-

The fabulous sunshine we are basking in does cause additional problems when we are out catching barbel in these conditions.
The water temperature will increase , the dissolved oxygen will be reduced and barbel will take longer to recover.
Seasoned barbel anglers will be aware of this but each year many anglers are fishing for barbel for the first time and this is really for their benefit.
Basically be aware that the barbel will take a lot longer to recover so keep them out of the water for the shortest possible time and rest them for as long as it takes before letting them swim off.

To add my little bit to that, if you're fishing for barbel, don't fish too lightly for them, leading to a long, protracted fight which will exhaust the fish, and please, please, please, PLEASE....

DO NOT PUT BARBEL IN A KEEPNET!

Well said Johnny, I've had the misfortune to see a few barbel floating past belly up over the years. They give us a lot of pleasure so we need to respect them. Be 100% sure they've recovered before returning them.

Re: Caring for barbel in the heat

Going to try and catch a barbel from the Teme in July will spend a few days @ Broadwas trying to do this. I have took your advice and bought a rod for the job and spooling up a Stradic with 12lb Mono. Will be roaming the river to give myself the best chance! I only want 1 then I can go back to my Breams.

Any tips or suggestion would be most welcome. I was thinking a lead (not to make too much noise) Hemp & Pellet loose feed then a chunk of meat or halibut pellet on a hair rig?

Also wondered if fishing a chubber float would work?

Thanks All

Surely, those of us who really care for our barbel just won't fish for them. We could look after the fish by just waiting until the heat wave is over. Perhaps the lovely Carol may find us some rain in a couple of weeks!

Very good point Carl, it's probably best to leave them where they are in extremes of temperatures like we're having at the moment.

I managed a 5lb barbel from Broadwas last year on hair rigged pellet with a cage feeder. Well worth the effort in such a gorgeous spot
