I'm a novice on the River Severn. Fished Severn Stoke yesterday. Started at dawn, the river fell by about eight inches by late morning but had gone back up by the same height by 2pm.
What causes this? Surely its not tidal !
Had a few small Bream and an absolutely mint 9lb Barbel.
Also had a black mink come to within a few feet.

Re: The Severn

Well done with the barbel, nice fish for a Severn novice.grin

The Severn isn't tidal at Severn Stoke, from memory it is only tidal up to Tewksbury but it's a long time since I fished that far down. I'm sure someone will confirm or refute what I think.

The river is greatly influenced by rain on the Welsh hills. It runs off them quite quickly and then works it's way down river over 2 to 3 days. It's about 2 days at Bewdley maybe more like 3 at SS.
There are apps that let you track the river levels at various monitoring stations along the river.

Here at Bewdley the river went to from about .7m to 1.5m in a day and is now about .9m (all figures approx.). It's raining in Wales tonight so expect the river to rise over the next few days.

I don't know what happens at SS but round here we pray for extra water on the river, it makes it easier to catch the barbel.

Re: The Severn

Thanks Curry,
I've just never fished where the water goes down and back up so far in just 7 hours!
Forecast rain tomorrow so hopefully good for next weekend.

Re: The Severn

CarCam, If you think the Severn is bad you should try the Teme. That goes up and down like a fiddlers elbow.

One river I fished down south was even worse, It could be normal level in the morning, over the bank and in the field by tea time and back to normal the next day. I've checked it's level before setting off and by the time I got to the river an hour later it was 3 foot up.

It keeps you on your toes.

Re: The Severn

That’s why we fish rivers and not manicured muddy puddles.
Let’s see what happens this weekend!
