Hi
Can anyone help in finding a still water venue to catch some pike? I know most waters hold them, but has anyone got a “Go To” pike water.
Prefer quantity rather than size if it makes a difference

Re: Still water pike venue, help please

Places like Swann Pool in Sandwell Valley used to offer reliable sport but last time I fished it, it had (like so many other venues) been hammered by poachers.
The same is true of the middle Severn where I haven't caught a pike over 5lb in several seasons despite being primarily a lure angler.
Perhaps your best bet would be to adopt a mobile approach and fish the canals.
Don't expect to many specific venue suggestions on an open forum though because public forums can easily be trawled by unsavoury types and a venue destroyed with setlines overnight.

Re: Still water pike venue, help please

A valid point, I think this is the reason that a i seek past my go to venues. I caught a group of EE’s fishing them the other week. I spoke to them and they were under the impression that could take 1 pike a day out of the river! And all the Zander they caught. I tried to explain and reason with the chap, but they would not listen. Not BAA water I hasten to add. There were 5 / 6 of them.
If they all take one fish, both weekend days every week end, soon adds up to an incredible amount of fish.
I’m going to jump on the canals for a day. The rivers are swollen and coloured any way. Never mind, roll on the Spring

You are allowed to take one pike (upto 65cm) a day if club rules allow so they weren't technically wrong.

But note the 'if the club allows it'.... many clubs, in fact all that I know of inc the BAA and the 3 other clubs I'm a member of plus the Canal and Rivers Trust (so the vast majority of canals as they are the landowners), prohibit the removal of any fish, dead or alive, from their waters.

You are quite correct Lee, and any small fish up to 20cm! Although any local clubs do ban the taking / removal of any fish. I can’t believe this is still the case or non club waters. Surely we need to bring the rules in to 2018?
I don’t want to start the red sauce or brown sauce debate, but you would be better off not having a closed season and instagating full ban or removing of any fish all year round. At least this would get policed by the daily angler, and hopefully the bailiffs checking on the anglers?
Game fishing is a different ball game and needs rules and regulating in an complete different way to suit and protect the stocks and species, not an issue.
Don’t we all fish for our own but many different reasons, but we should all put them back to “fight another day” surely?
