Hi to all forum members, it's been twelve months since my first post. Today I have been back on the Teme to fish the same stretch I did last year. I had a decent day, catching five decent chub to 4lb plus, and one barbel around 5lb. I also lost two other fish, one of which was a good barbel. The river looked in good nick, and the weather was great. I have fished the middle Severn, quite a lot this year, and had some really good days barbel fishing. I have noticed with delight the return of streamer weed on the Severn, which seems to have helped all sorts of wildlife thrive. I have caught quite a few small barbel around 12oz which is nice to see. The Teme as far as I can see has very, little weed present. This was not always so. I can remember many years ago the river was full of streamer weed. I feel that if the weed were to return then the fish stocks would increase. I feel that farming practices, some unique to the teme valley, may be to blame for this barren river effect. Maybe in years to come, it may return to its former glory. It will always be, my favourite river, beautiful, unique, and timeless. Cheers T C.

Tony,
IMO you have hit the nail on the head with your observations and opinion on the lack of streamer weed in the Teme and the decline in certain species of fish therein, especially Barbel. [see the post:Catching on the river Teme by adamph96 & my reply to his experience]. Your comments are reflected by other anglers I have had chance to talk to along the banks of the Teme (and Severn) and although a study by a student at Bournemouth University into the fish population of the Teme doesn't go far enough in explaining such decline the fact is that the ecology of the river has changed dramatically over the last 15 years or so and I can only agree that the absence of streamer weed and decline in Barbel is too coincidental to be ignored.
At least you caught some nice fish and we continue to hope the return of hard fighting prince of the river will not be too far away if the streamer weed returns. Perhaps the EA should try to replant stances of weed in various stretches to see if it is a viable proposition but I doubt resources would allow for such indulgent practice?
Best of luck when you return to this idyllic river.

Re planting is a viable option, Dave Mason has done this with great success on his bit.

Hi Tone,
Fished our usual stretch on the Teme today.Very slow in the morning but moved pegs and switched to meat and had 2 fish. One chub to around 2 and a half pounds and a cracking barbel of 8lb 2oz.I missed a few bites as well. All on a running rig with a third of an ounce lead and a trickle of hemp and bits of meat.I'm convinced there's a double in there! Very good article about the weed but I can't comment as I wasn't born in the 30's smiling

Re: Teme heaven 2

Hi Mark, thanks for reminding me how old I am. It's my 50th year of angling, this year, and I'm as keen now as I was back then, if a little less competitive. Back in the seventys I was a member of Coleshill DAS a top match fishing club in its day. Most of the older guys were very secretive, on advice,on tactics and baits and all sorts, to give them that extra edge. Thankfully I find a lot of anglers these days especially baa members very helpful with advice and info, on swims, baits, rigs and many other things. This has been a breath of fresh air, to me, and helped a lot, especially at coppice which I have fished quite a bit this season. I have in return tried, where I can to advise, others, and help them catch. Thanks to all members, I have talked to,and become friends with, especially Mark, whose instruction on carping, has been invaluable to me. Cheers mate. Better end this post before I get too soft in me old age. PS I attended the agm last year, and it was pretty poorly attended. I know for a lot of members it is difficult, but it would be nice to see, a few more there this year. If you do have, questions to ask, or points to get over face to face with the committee, that is the place to do it. Anything that will help to improve things, for the sport we all love. Cheers Tony.

Re: Teme heaven 2

Had a lovely afternoon trotting maggots last week. 33 fish nearly all chub and dace - just 1 brownie and 1 grayling. The best chub were c 3.5 lb and 3 lb - all on a pint of maggots ......
Nothing wrong with the theme imho unless you are obsessed with barbel. My first 4 casts resulted in trout, chub , grayling and a dace. ... that’s what I call “fishing” ;)
