I see 200lb of tench have been stocked into Retreat Pool 2. Tench are one of my favourite species, so I might give it a try during the river closed season.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me how the pools fished last Summer? Didn't see much on this forum about the place, so would be interested in any info.

Re: Tench for Retreat

From what I can remember reading last year pool 1 fished small carp one a chuck but pool 2 was hard going with not much caught and I think had a fair bit of weed.

Re: Tench for Retreat

Hi Meatman, I fished pool 1 for a couple of hours one afternoon last September. Only took a few bit and pieces with me, and managed eventually, half a dozen or so "mirrors" only around the 2 / 3 lb mark but on the pole better than staying at home. The pool was a bit weedy at the car park end but a few swims at the far end were fishable. Fed small pellets with maggot on the hook. There was a few remarks last year regarding these pools and generally "fisherman" moaning about another Carp puddle and the like, its not as if the BAA haven't told us what has been stocked so if you don't want to catch carp don't fish for them there ! Lastly there were a couple of other guys fishing and catching similar to me, one mentioned he took his grandson and thoroughly enjoyed himself, so good luck and enjoy.

Re: Tench for Retreat

I fished two of the pools last year with my father and caught small silvers and a bunch of carp. There was no sign of the reported crucians.
I wasn't planning on visiting again because carp don't really float my boat and if I feel like catching them, I can catch them in much nicer surroundings five minutes up the road for the price of a day ticket that works out cheaper than the petrol to get to Retreat.
Tench are different though. Fisheries with a decent head of tench are hard to find.
I may just pay another visit.

Re: Tench for Retreat

Some of you may have read my ‘BAA Pools’ thread. I’m a Tench lover too and can’t wait to get down to retreat when the weather is better. I’d agree that good Tench waters are few and far between in the midlands and this is a good move by BAA. Regarding the weed- is raking allowed on waters? Hope to see some of you down on the bank in a couple of months netting some Tinca’s

Re: Tench for Retreat

Does anyone know the depth of Retreat Pools 1&2? Is the bottom even or has it some deeper/ shallower ares?
Thanks.

Re: Tench for Retreat

Had my first Tench from pool 2 today, good 3lb but had a ragged tail and was badly marked on body. See photo. Also had a very small one and a very, very small one. Upturned mouths as shown, see photos with pellet band expander on one and the 2 maggots on the other for size !!
A couple of other anglers have suggested Ide.
