TAKING THE WIFE.

Summer evenings are upon us. When I just wanted a few hours sometimes on a nice evening my wife liked to bring a chair and newspaper and sit while I fished. Am I right in thinking the BAA some time ago said you can't do this, basically if you aren't a member, bugger off. There is nothing I can see in the bye laws about this, I wouldn't want a load of screaming kids running about, but to take the missus along for a couple of hours or one non fishing person, maybe a potential member seems reasonable. Obviously if you are on the canal or somewhere like Marlcliffe you are on a public right of way so anyone can be there. She used to come to Coppice sometimes. I know it has not got a lot to do with fishing generally but it seems really petty and niggles me to say the least. Gripe over. sad PS some of you go to get away from the wife no doubt. smiling

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

i think it was the case many years ago, but these days I see plenty of folk taking the missus with them, they sit there and take in the scenery. Can't see a problem with it myself.

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

BAA had this horrible and stupid rule that if you take a non fishing guest you still have to pay...£5 I think it was/ is. Can't imagine any bailiff enforcing that, even the most jobsworth...Hang on I think I might someone that might!!

Besides how the hell could they prove who/ she really was, and if they were with you?

''Just had this lady sit herself down next to me''

Suppose they could say it's trespass, but that is a civil matter, so BAA would have to take out a private prosecution, poor woman, and all for a quiet bit of fishing, I dunno what's the world coming to?

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

If you click the button to join the BAA then the link for the application form, you'll see one of the options is for a 'non fishing' membership. Which as onelastcast said is £5.00.
As has already suggested the majority of us go fishing to get away from the wife, though I have taken my wife on just a couple of occasions - before this new membership existed.
Just beware, sunchairs don't work very well on steep or uneven banks you'll be constantly interrupted from fishing to apply suncream, find a flat spot for the chair, then find another one because the sun has moved round. The mere sight of anything crawling or flying creates mass panic - the slightest hint of any rain and you'll be packing up to go home.
You have been warned.

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

Non-Fishing membership is £5 and the reason it was introduced was to comply with our insurance regulations.

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

Be good if we could have an official response from The BAA on here - apologies if any have already but i'm still confused as I definitely paid £10 a couple of years back.

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

John Williams replied Hornet, confirming it is £5. I have assumed it is JW our general secretary/vice president from the way the post was phrased. Sounds like he owes you a fiver smiling

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

Non-Fishing membership was introduced originally @ £10. This was reduced to £5 from January 2017. So now everuybody's clear and i don't owe anyone a fiver!
Cheers

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

That's great value, half he costawkward , But what has Insurance cover got to do with the levy? How is this rule upheld if the BAA waters are on a public right of way, such as a canal tow path, Severn Way etc? Must be a problem for a bailiff to implement this rule,

Never heard of a similar rule in any other Angling Club.Perhaps it is unique to BAA Insurers?

Re: TAKING THE WIFE.

One would also imagine that on a water that is on private land the club must know who is on there out of respect to the land owner and could be liable for any issues caused by unauthorised non members accompanying someone fishing. If it's public right of way then common sense would prevail and all the bailiffs i've met have excersized this thus far.
