What a hard match this turned out to be, 14 dry nets out of 18 anglers who braved the cold easterly wind today. Four anglers caught one fish each.

1st Paul Skidmore 2 - 0 - 0 ( One chub on pole fished worm )

2nd Barry Robson 0 - 4 - 0 ( One perch on pole fished worm )

3rd Geoff Garrish 0 - 1 - 8 ( One dace on pole fished maggot )

4th Garry Mason 0 - 1 - 0 ( One dace on pole fished maggot )

Told you it fished hard !! thawed out in The Vine after.

That is tough going Ollie. Great turn out though. Are you parking at the pub? The roadside option looks pretty limited. Cheers.

Most canals fished very very hard. Need to see this cold blast through now. Good turnout !

Raver, we are lucky to have a member who is an employee of the Canal and River Trust so we got access to park near the boat moorings alongside the cottages opposite the Vine pub. The pub has a barrier across the car park and only opens it towards lunchtime, other than that there is limited parking on the road and you can get about three or four cars on the bridge.

Raver / One More Cast,

We have fished this stretch many times on matches and have had really good results with close to double figures usually required to win. The canal had quite a bit of colour in which we thought was unusual as it was so cold but we expected to catch, we have caught loads more fish than Sunday when we've had to break the ice on a clear canal. One thing we have noticed over the last few years is that there seems more pike in this stretch than any other section we fish, and there were a couple of anglers fishing for pike on the early pegs after our match had finished.

Ollie, I have observed good returns from your previous outings on this stretch. I even did a recce but noticed the limited parking. I did wonder how 18 of you managed to get anywhere near the bridge, so that explains it. It is a venue that we have considered. That is interesting regarding the colour. The pike are probably plentiful as there is a healthy stock of silvers. Last year we had poor matches at both Stewpony and Caunsal. May have to do a well planned car share as we typically get around 9 or 10 turn out for canal matches. Thanks for the info.
