Had an interesting late afternoon session yesterday on the Teme at Bransford. There I was minding my own business trotting a float down, had a few nice chub and just landed a barbel of 5lb 8oz.....I could hear a fox hunt in the fields upstream, next thing approx 20 hounds crash through diagonally directly to my right literally down the river as there are shallow riffles upstream and through my swim and preceded to jump in and out of the swim....at this point the sediment that the hounds had churned up had turned the swim into a cocoa coloured river! Amazingly with the hounds out of sight the fox appeared and slunk off from under the far bank up stream......I decided to fish on and within 30 minutes landed a chub of just under 5lb and 2 more barbel (lost another just at the net)! The stirred up water seemed to get the fish feeding even better! Went for a beer after at the pub nearby.....aptly named the Fox.....what an evening!

Cheers DavidH, the fish are still there, I guess with serious floods in recent years and the effect that will have had on the riverbed they have just moved to different parts of the river. What I love about the Teme is when you are float fishing (mainly maggots and casters) you don't know what you are going to catch next.

Looks like an old Mitchell reel in the pic - maybe even a Mitchell match?

Still one of my favourite reels, I've still got a couple from back in the 80's but not looked after them. Need to strip them down, re-lubricate and get them going again.

Well done on the catches, as for fox hunting, I thought it was banned?

Hi Meatman

Yup you are right its a Mitchell Match, I bought it in the 1980's when I was still at school (saved up my dinner money for yonks......needs must). I have still got the original tube of Mitchell reel lube! Give the bale arm a good clean and it goes a treat, perhaps a bit heavy in comparison to the new reels though?

I thought the same as you on the fox hunting, good to see the old fox live to fight another day!

Great day for you matey well done, re fox hunting I thought their "season" didn't start until end of September anyway ! Then they are only allowed to follow a baited scent laid by a runner, and if a fox just happens along ! ! ! !

Hi Mewcus

It was a full on fox hunt, the only thing I didn't see was hunters on horseback and the runners. Good old Reynard gave em' the slip!

Hi B13, when the local hunt are in the area where I live the Hunt Master always rings the night before to let us know. A great traditional ENGLISH sight that's centuries old, and as I have chickens, Geese, Peacocks plus loads of wild ducks, I personally don't mind the hunting, BUT I think if I were fishing and they came through my swim it would be quite a surprise !

Great story,it's amazing how such commotion in your peg can still produce a few fish.
I had a similar experience but mine was with a Labrador on the staffs-worc canal!
