What do people think about the EA planning to spend 20 million to provide fish passes at weirs on the Severn to help Shad. Could the money not be better spent ???

Re: Fish passes

dont disagree with them spending that much but i do not understand spending millions to help shad on the Severn whilst installing hydro electric in other locations around the country which are detrimental to fish and fish travel. In most of Europe they are stopping building or removing small hydro electric as its more damaging to the environment than the benefits of "clean energy"

Re: Fish passes

The money is an EU grant specifically to help restore shad populations, so it would not be available for other purposes. Also I guess there is a motivation to spend it before we leave the EU.

Re: Fish passes

If it's a grant then it's free money so to speak which can only be allocated to it's original purpose. There probably are more worthy causes and although i'd love to catch a Shad, I do hope there's not comparisons to the huge amount of dosh they spent on trying to get Salmon returning up the Thames.
