Please can someone confirm that MEM under contract from the CRT have been electrofishing the Birmingham Worcester canal?

If so how far have they been?

As far as I’m aware it was just Diglis marina that they removed fish.BAA waters don’t start until Blackpole.

Re: Electrofishing the Birmingham Worcester canal

To be honest I’m not entirely sure.I know that fishing isn’t allowed in Diglis marina so maybe they are having trouble with people fishing there?Obviously as soon as any Zander are removed they have to be destroyed or moved to a water that passes strict criteria. The other fish that were removed were moved onto another clubs water from what I’ve heard.Complete waste of time and money if you ask me,but as far as I’m aware no BAA waters had any fish removed.

For information:

Worcester Diglis through to Hanbury and Kings Norton through to Birmingham city centre have been electrofished. The remaining middle section will be done when structural works have been finished later this month.

Re: Electrofishing the Birmingham Worcester canal

I have been told by CRT that no native fish were or will be removed during this.Zander aren’t native and are removed.Don’t shoot the messenger I’m just relaying the info I was told.No native coarse fish would be moved or removed without consultation from the controlling club.

Re: Electrofishing the Birmingham Worcester canal- How does it affect the fishing?

Hello fellow d’anglers,
Just had a late afternoon till dusk session on the Birmingham-Worcester Canal at Astwood Lane.
Perfect conditions, perfect colour but an absolute total blank?

Talking to a local resident who lives two houses from the canal he told me that the pitch that I was on is usually good for everything Bream, Roach, Perch and even Carp.
Standard approach a couple of balls of liquidised bread fished with punched bread, nowt.
White and red mags, nowt.
Casters, nowt
Worms, nowt. Various combinations of the above fished at different depths, Could not catch a cold.

A lure angler came down the canal and he had not had anything and he informed me that two anglers he had passed were also blanking?

He went on south and an hour or so later returned and had not had anything and saw another couple of anglers who had been fishing from early morning with no bites?

When I packed up at 7.30pm a local who lives on a canal boat asked how I had done was not surprised as he said that the C&RT had Electrofished this section last week.

So are fish put off feeding by this Electric Current?

Anyway it has not put me off as I shall Keep on Fishing

I can't see it helping the fishing, but hopefully no long term damage smiling

Re: Electrofishing the Birmingham Worcester canal

I thought none of the BAA bits were going to get electro fished . ??? out of order if they have .I love that bit of canal . one of the reasons why I join the BAA ..might think twice if this is true next year.

I suggest members contact the CRT and voice their opinions on this.
It would also be nice if the BAA asked the CRT to cease this practice, as lure fishing on our canals is one of the few forms of angling available to many members during lockdowns when travel is restricted.

Re: Electrofishing the Birmingham Worcester canal

Surely it makes more sense that as members we lobby our club and then they contact the CRT on our behalf, one strong voice as opposed to many whispers?

I too have fished have fished the sections mentioned and I too have struggled. 1 blank and 1 fish in 2 visits. I also spoke to other anglers and they were also not catching. One guy fishing from a boat told me all he'd had was a minnow in 4 days.

Native fish have been removed from the canal. When Diglis was netted the Blackpole section (BAA and WDUAA) was netted at the same time. Were BAA informed? Bream and roach were seen to be removed - no idea where they were taken. Basically fish theft?

Re: Electrofishing the Birmingham Worcester canal

We (GirlingAS) fished Blackpole last Saturday (4th April 2021) and we all struggled, only a few bits were caught. We have Tibberton this Saturday (27/4/2021).

We choose these venue and accept the distance because these canal venues produce. My members will want answers before the weekend, it's a long way to drive to then blank.
The questions they will be asking are;-
(1) Has the fishing been affected at Tibberton, should we transfer to another venue?
(2) Have native fish been removed?
(3) Why does the BAA not keep members informed, allowing clubs to travel to affected venues?

Come on John, it's time you kept the members better informed about occurrences like this, can you make a statement on this issue?

Re: Electrofishing the Birmingham Worcester canal

Frank...I have been in contact with CRT following the reports of fish being removed from our club waters. They have insisted that no native fish were removed during the electro fishing nor would they be without consultations with the controlling clubs.I am yet to see any video/photographic evidence of any native species being removed,I would of thought in this day and age that anyone witnessing this would gather evidence as most carry a mobile phone with a camera on?
As I’ve said previously I’ve asked the question and that’s what I’ve been told so don’t shoot the messenger!
