See proposals put to government concerning angling. Still no fishing, proposals only.

Re: When We Fish Again

I've posted this on the ANNOUNCEMENTS tag. It is better here

BAA waters like those throughout the country are closed, but with the virus spread beyond the peak it is right and proper to begin to plan for how we can begin a phased return to more normal times. The Angling Trust has been working with government and stakeholders within the angling community to devise a safe, workable phased plan to enable angling to re-commence. You can read their conclusions on the AT website.

More importantly and something everyone of us can do to hasten this day is to email your MP and draw their attention to the well argued and practical strategy drawn up by Jamie Cook (CEO AT) and his team. The AT has on its website a simple form for us all to fill and it will be emailed to your MP which will put pressure on government not to ignore our interests when decisions begin to be taken THIS COMING WEEK about how and when to ease the lockdown. Go to
http://joinanglingtrust.net/when-we-fish-again-latest.......

Most of us can make the time (about 5 minutes) in the next few days to do this and it is a little sacrifice for what could make an enormous difference. Come on do it!

Re: When We Fish Again

This is a very easy form of getting our message across to many MPs in the area. Angling Trust have prepared the format and all you have to do is type in your details and a short message.
Please make the effort as i am sure governing bodies of many sports and hobbies are doing the same. Make sure we get our voice heard.

Done mine - only takes a few minutes - just follow the instructions - finds your local MP based on your postcode, finds the email address and basically automates the whole process.
Get behind this guys, as it could make the difference to get us back on the banks soon.

Re: When We Fish Again

From another site:

#whenwefishagain update - Although the government review of the coronavirus lockdown restrictions will occur on Thursday we have been told not expect an announcement until Sunday.
The Angling Trust proposals have been incredibly well received in Westminster and the reaction from MPs to our write in campaign has been very encouraging. Over 7,000 emails from the angling community have now been sent into Parliament and we are yet to hear of an MP who doesn’t support a return for angling.
Thanks for all your support so far. The best way of continuing to support the Angling Trust is to join.http://joinanglingtrust.net/

Re: When We Fish Again

As of the email I received earlier, it is now in excess of 8000 emails, but I still think that from a UK fishing community in the millions, although encouraging, I think it still seems like a "drop in the ocean" so to speak.

Judging by the big shoal of "gonks" I saw earlier today, I'm hoping they are still there when we get back on the banks again. If you haven't already, please do go on the Angling Trust website and use the link to write to your local MP, and why not support angling and join the Angling Trust?

Re: Re: When We Fish Again

Re BobbyRedfin's post, I am not sure what the 8000 emails refers to. Is it a count (if so where from?) of anglers who have emailed their MP's under the aegis of the AT's campaign (and as emails go to each MP's office staff, not to a central point and staff usually send an acknowledgment before any more substantive reply; this seems unlikely) or is it something else?

I agree that 8000 emails if accurate and a representative total whilst encouraging is a small - and dare I say it -a very disappointing fraction of of the 1-2 million EA fishing license holders. Yet the fact remains that every signature is progress to get our point across.

Over 500 have looked at his thread which means they all have the means to email their MP. Have you dear reader? As an aside I would have hoped that BAA management might have shown a lead on this, perhaps they have and if so it would be good to hear of it.

Re: When We Fish Again

I do believe the the 8000 does refer to the number of anglers who have emailed their local MP. I'm sure with today's modern technology and software this can be tracked in some way.

I have indeed sent mine to my local MP, hence the email from the AT stating the 8000 other signatories to the campaign. I have also since joined the AT to further my support.

As a bit of a side note, when I started fishing some 25 years ago, it was regularly stated that there were over 4 million anglers in the UK. Now it's hovering around the 2 million mark. I'm pretty sure the advancement of technology, video games etc is partly to do with it but it does make me sad to think that if these numbers are even roughly accurate, that to lose 1/2 of a sports participation numbers is a poor view of the angling community as a whole to not have been doing more.

Re: When We Fish Again

A really helpful and informed response from BobbyRedfin, for which thanks.

I emailed my MP via the AT link but received no confirmatory email from AT, neither did 3 members of another club (for which I am Secretary) who I know did the same. However it is still re-assuring to learn that AT appears to be monitoring at least of our work as individuals by logging at least some email transmissions to MPs on this.

Like BobbyRedfin the historic 4m figure for anglers is one I recall, but EA annual license sales suggest that that today's figures are about 35% of this number. The decline is regrettable but as observed above not unexpected given other more popular alternatives in the past 2 decades. My guess is BAA membership along with many other clubs mirrors this rate of decline over period.

I am not aware of AT membership numbers but I know they fall far short of the number of individual anglers who participate in the sport and is a fraction of EA license numbers. in the circumstances 8000 is perhaps quite a high response rate (albeit putting angling in the 'minority pastime category' in the eyes of those who make decisions).

As previously noted above and elsewhere the importance of joining the AT at both individual and club level has never been greater. It is 'our voice' to government and its agencies. If we care about a future for our sport it is the responsibility of each one of us to give AT sufficient clout - through weight of numbers - to fight our corner with decision makers. If AT cannot do so we will see an inevitable and predictable decline in our ability to shape events.

Rather proves the point about the benefits of a clear, well informed and researched message to government, but be clear on exactly what is permissible. It is a conditional green light only. Check out AT link as above.

The Angling Trust are due to do a live video on Facebook today at 6 PM. Hopefully with a question and answer session we will have a better idea where we stand.
