Not fished there before, but looking to go in the next few weeks. Anyone got any tips, or know how it has been fishing of late?

Re: Apperley Pools

Over 1000 views and 2 comments--says it all. Here are my views. I the last 2-3 years I have fished the pool 5 times.(the first pool by the car park) I have tried pole at various lengths, waggler, method feeder and cage feeder with every bait you can think of. I have never had a touch or a bite. In addition I often walk the Severn Way down from Deerhurst to Haw Bridge or the reverse. I always stop off at the pool and sit and observe. never seen anything top or any activity whatsoever. On the odd occasion there has been the odd angler there catching nothing..It is a lovely quiet pool and does look fishy. Looks can be misleading. Th BAA obviously spent a good deal of money for the car park, fencing and access. In my opinion not money well spent. As for the stretch the BAA has near the pool on the river (Deerhurst) it is completely unfishable .At a push just a couple of pegs that can be accessed. Another stretch that should be got rid of. Your original post was in January--I wonder if you went and if so how did you get on.

I chatted to somebody last closed season that fished the evenings who said it has hard going but had caught small stuff, he also said he had seen carp around the island.

I have thought about going down in the closed season to try cut a swim to fish on the river, but it’s just so overgrown, and if I got into difficulties would never be found. Shame cause I’m sure it would be good fishing!

A bit old but here is a picture following an afternoon at Apperley July 2019!

Simple waggler rig and maggots.

Must admit that I've never seen any of the carp or tench that were introduced around this time.

Hornet, I admire your thoughts in cutting pug a peg, but that might be a bit hairy If you desire some Lower Severn fishing check out Lower Lode Tewkesbury, it has a lawn you can fish from, controlled by the Cheltenham rowing club, they will even lay on tea and cucumber sandwiches, only kidding. But its a good maggot feeder venue, parking alongside etc. There seems to be more fish in that area probably due to the confluence of the Mill Avon nearby. It's a DT £7 I believe. Oh and you fancy a pint, there is a ferry to the pub opposite, when open of course.

Nice bag of roach that timawood

Hi Neil, hope your well, day ticket £7!! Cucumber sandwiches an beer!...must think I’m made of money!

I chat to the old boys in Cheltenham who used to fish around Oddas Chapel, they all say it used to be good fishing for bream and roach, I thought maybe that unpressured stretch down to the Coal Hse might be good for something... and quiet...if I could get near it!
When the weather warms up will go have a walk an see!

Does anyone check their message box on here??

Re: Apperley Pools

Well? Mmm that's something I have long given up on ..but thanks for asking. I too have often wondered about that Apperley stretch on the Severn, but looking at the sheer drop and no ledge..well. You probably know Jon at Bankside has a stretch at the Red Lion, not sure how it has been fishing, but there were reports of Zander if that's your thing. Obv Bream too. No DT though . I did have a carp or two out of the old GUAA stretch below Lower Lode, and there are a couple of accesable pegs...Its a vast unfished stretch that deserves some scrutiny.

The BAA Severn stretch at Deerhurst ( Odda's Chapel ) is totally overgrown and impossible to fish.
I walked the stretch a couple of years ago. What you might catch there is any body's guess ? Bream,Roach and even maybe the odd barbel .

Re: Apperley Pools

Looked at the GUAA stretch upstream of odds’s chapel and all the pegs have those giant rocks to fish off, is it not the same downstream?
Can’t find any info on GUAA, are they still going? Does anyone know.
10min drive from my gaff smiling

Re: Apperley Pools

Don't think GUAA exist anymore, but the stretch below the rowing club has been neglected for years. and there are only a couple of accesable 'pegs'. Was told they gave it up as match weights plummeted.

You could try calling Gloucester Angling on the Bristol road.He should be able to tell you if GUAA is still going . The number to call is 01452 520074 . They are open Monday Tuesday Thursday Friday and Saturday . They are closed on Wednesdays . Hope that helps ,

Careful HOT, venturing outside during lockdown advisories will get 'Detective Jeff' on your case. He'll find out where you live, measure distances on Google Maps, and rummage through your bins. grin

Don’t worry John, 10 min drive and 5m as the crow flies!
Anyway, I’ve got a new lawyer called Chris, only works weekends for the cost of a good pint!
Just in case that crow takes a detour!!

Re: Apperley Pools

Johnny you are so funny and I cant stop laughing .All I did was to give Mr Toad a contact number to call and ask if the GUAA was still in existence and you respond with a 3 foot twitch . Once again Johnny it appears that for some reason I have '' Rattled your cage ''

The season has closed as you well know and hope fully with the start of the season 3 months away and we can all get back to some kind of normality when it starts again .

No Jeff, it's called 'a sense of humour' - most normal folk have one.

Try lightening up a bit, the season starts in 12 weeks.
