Brown Trout Lure fishing during Coarse Close Season?

Hey everyone,

I am really keen to give Trout lure fishing a go with light tackle (as something different to fly fishing on lakes) and I am a member of BAA.

I was wondering is Trout lure fishing allowed during the March-June Close Season on rivers like the Teme, Lugg and Upper Severn?

Also, would these be the best places to try catching Brown Trout with a lure with a BAA membership?

Thanks

hi,I would say that you would need a rod licence to cover you to fish for salmon & seatrout to be able to spin for them, nothing stopping you flyfishing?
Probably best to speak to baa hq or contact ea?

Hey Stew, thanks for replying!

Yeah that is where I am a bit confused as the license I have is "Trout, coarse fish and eel licence", which covers non-migratory trout.

So I just wanted to confirm that the BAA waters allow lure fishing during the Coarse Close season, and if so then I think my license covers fishing for those kinds of trout?

BAA recommend to ask in the forums first but I may drop them an email just to confirm as really don't want to do something I shouldn't

I would say if you're spinning in the closed season on rivers, you need a salmon license mate, that's the only legal way, when I started fishing in the 70s my dad used to take me on the teme and sometimes fished the worm on the lead if the river wasn't right for the fly.
But I think those rules have changed now!

Why not try the Teme and the Welsh Severn with a very simple leger rig and a couple of dendras wriggling on it.(No float fishing and no keepnets ).Keep it very simple ,one rod,a landing net and roam the water. Have a look at severn trent bye-laws govt. website if in any doubt .Also ask our Welsh Severn bailiffs-top blokes...and lady..

You do not need a salmon and migratory trout rod licence to fish for non-migratory trout. They are covered by the coarse and non-migrator trout licence.
Obviously, you will want to stick to fast and shallow water and not be tempted to fish those perchy and pikey looking holes because nobody is going to believe that you're after trout if you do.
Trout numbers have increased in recent years due to the much lower numbers of anglers using maggots, but they are still pretty localised.
One thing I would suggest is to either stick to lures of size 2 and up, or swap the hook for a single because little trout tend to swallow small lures, and it can be messy trying to remove them.
