My local Ashby canal has been getting clearer by the day due to no boat travel. So a question to any budding biologist out there. When boats eventually move again will the disturbance of the sediment built up on the canal bottom release any gasses built up harming the fish stocks.

Re: clear canals

There are sections of the Staffs-Worcester canal that I fish matches on in the winter when there is little or no boat traffic at all and the water is crystal clear and we struggle for bites, then a boat comes through and you start catching again so I don’t think it will matter unless there is a case of pollution there. The sediment on the bottom will be made up from rotting leaves etc that have fell in the canal from the previous winter so I don’t think it’s anything to be worried about.

Same here in Kidderminster. What's interesting is the amount of weed that has seemingly come from nowhere.
Hopefully the clear water and burgeoning insect life will be good for fry recruitment.

Re: clear canals

The sizeable shoal of gudgoen I came across earlier today were definitely enjoying any fly-life as well as the floating debris.

Re: clear canals

Good to see some Gudgeon there, there are nowhere near the numbers of them there were 25-30 years ago when I started fishing on the canal.Used to have a few hundred on the whip in a session but they don’t seem to be there anymore,on the the Staffs-Worc anyway.Often wondered why this is?Have the canals got a lot cleaner and that has had an effect?Or the increase in big Perch and Chub?I don’t know but there aren’t the numbers there used to be.

Re: clear canals

Have to agree Stew, I remember when I used to fish club matches between Stourport and Kidderminster, you could easily build 1-2lb of gudgoen in the first hour or two. You could pretty much expect a few gonks from anywhere along there.

The canals are definitely cleaner than they were 20 odd years ago, I'm not sure if that has an effect or not but the there are definitely a few more perch on there theses days, and some good sized ones too! I've seen perch pushing a couple of pounds come out of there over the past few years caught on small rubber lures.

It's highly possible that chub and perch got into the canal having come up out the River Severn, via the lock system.

Re: clear canals

I’ve had Perch take Gudgeon I’m reeling in before and I know a big Chub would eat them. The Chubare really thriving in the Staffs-Worcester now though, catch them from a few ounces up to 6lb+ so they’re obviously breeding.

Re: clear canals

I reckon species numbers change over the years, when I started fishing the staffs-worc Forty odd years ago gudgeon were dominating and did for many years, gradually a change started roach then perch and even dace were caught in numbers, now as stew has said chub are in abundance and have been for a few years now, bream too seem to be making a comeback. Maybe gudgeon will make a recovery but think there's probably too many predators in the canal to be like the good old days.

Would agree with the bream starting to come back again. I had a few during an roach session from the River Stour (opposite top end of Newalls stretch) at the back end of the season.
