Fazeley Canal what is being caught - can the C&RT conduct a Fish Survey?

Hello Fellow D’anglers.
I fished the Fazeley Canal today, just up from the Drayton Swing Bridge.
What a disappointment.
With four choices of bait, Bread, Caster, Reds, Pinkies and Worms, I blanked!
What was more concerning was a complete absence of fish activity, or evidence of fish/ fry?

Whereas on Saturday I fished the Staffs-Worcs Canal and bagged up using the same baits and techniques, Chublet, Gudgeon, Perch, Roach, Ruffe and a Jack Pike, the angler down from me was catching Skimmer’s and Bream.
Plus there were hundreds of fry visible and lots of fish topping, brilliant in comparison to the Fazeley Canal!

So is there a problem with the Fazeley Canal?
How often do the Canal & River Trust carry out fish surveys on their Canals?

Are there any of our members that have or do have consistently good sessions on the Fazeley Canal, I would be interested to know?

Keep on Fishing

TEGof I’m correct it’s been electo fished a lot in recent times to remove the zander . Maybe this has had md a detrimental affect on the fish ??

it's stuffed with roach and perch plus loads of fry next to the marston hotel just up from bodymore heath. i went lure fishing up there last week and caught a dozen perch sadly no zander as they have been removed.

The canal is at the bottom of my road, where the old Drome Café used to be. Sadly its a shadow of its former self, lots of small roach but quality fish are rare as rocking horse poo. there has been a lot of illegal fish taking over recent years and nothing has been done to stop it. been fishing it twice a week all summer on small rubber baits for perch, sadly I've had more disappointment than success. On Tuesday the stretch between the locks at the Drome café and just before the Boat pub was a foot lower than normal. Locks left open or a leak I have no idea. I blanked anyway

Hello Fellow D’anglers,
Thank you for the replies to date.

Quite a varied response, confused by what KenL has said though?

To be honest IF carrying out a Survey of the Fish Stocks is likely to cause so much damage then
I would not advocate it, however the clubs that fish contests on the Fazeley Canal may be able to substantiate how good the water is?

Keep on Fishing

I fish the Fazeley quite often, but the section near Bodymore Heath. Though i do fish with lures, i always have cracking sport there.

The canal and river trust electro fished our canal last year. From what I have seen its had no detrimental effect on our water.

What it has shown from reading the report is we have some large shoals of Chub in certain areas we did not know about. It also showed us certain sections of the 4 miles of canal have very few fish, while other areas for whatever reason are black with fish.

You can see from the big matches being fished on the canals some areas throw up massive weights of fish while other sections are struggling for ounces.

Hello Fellow D’anglers,
That was an interesting post of DavidH.

So as and when the CRT conduct their Electro Fishing they report on the existing fish stock, or absence of fish!

So in the case of absence of fish will the CRT conduct a restocking of fish?

We can live in hope

Fish find their own habitat that suits them, restocking in areas that have low stocks wont help.

Sorry lads only just revisited this post. Walsall & District own 4 miles of canal from Handsacre,Armitage down towards Fradley junction on the Trent and Mersey canal not far from Litchfield.

The club were informed by the CRT that it would be electro fishing our canal to gauge the spread of zander up from the Fradley junction. From what I remember they only removed 2 zander from the 4 miles of canal and concluded the zander had not spread above the junction in any numbers.

Our club secretary requested the report which was happily made available and made for an interesting read. I wish I could have walked the stretch on the days they were there but I couldn't get the time off work.

As one last cast says fish swim and move depending on the time of year and conditions.

One of the big problems with the Birmingham and Fazeley are crayfish, the greedy merchants from the C&RT and MEM have removed the Zander, one of the species that can control this vermin.

Electro fishing will always affect the fishing for many months after, it’s time the fish were left alone to find their own balance.
