Hello fellow D’anglers,
It is May 2nd
I have just read the Upper Severn Fishery Report for April so thank you Mike & Ann Wood for getting the report compiled and forwarded on to the BAA Secretary for posting on the Latest News!

Reading it was very informative good catches of Brown Trout, Chub and Grayling to 1.5lb in most places but some really good fish were caught at Forden.

Such as Chub to 4lb and Barbel to 6lb on fly and on nymph, I remember reading in the Compleat Angler by the Godfather of Angling Izaak Walton of the fish he caught on “natural bait”

So I may be tempted to go upstream and cast a fly or a nymph in pursuit of these lovely fish

Re: Fly Fishing on the Upper Severn - April Upper Severn Report

I must confess that this report upsets me.

I have always argued the case for us anglers that we actually feed the fish. For every fish that we catch, by loose feeding etc. we actually feed dozens if not hundreds of others that we don't catch.

As there is no nourishment in lures, why is it legal and acceptable to use them to catch species that are "protected" by law during the "closed season?

RSVP anybody?

Hello Stew and other fellow d’anglers,
If you can get to read the Compleat Angler that was first published in the mid 1600’s, (the copy that I have is just over 100 yers old) it is an amazing and insightful revelation into how our ancestors went about fishing!
Using Natural baits, such as flys and any bugs that they found on what hooks they had back in the day, as well as the fruits, berries, worms as well as the maggots collected from any rotting animal carcass as well as bread etc.

When it comes to the fishing today and the masses of manufactured baits that get put into fisheries is it any wonder we are now seeing fish of massive proportions compared to what they once were!

As I see it we have a “Big Mac” obesity crisis on some venues, such as we see on the high streets.

I have fished for over 60 years; I personally think that the “Close Season” is not required!
There has been no detrimental harm done to fish on lakes and canals, what is the reason for it being removed from Running Water?
By eliminating the close season on rivers
It would help keep the riverside vegetation down to make the fisheries more fishable, and it would identify any issues with water quality or other concerns identified by us anglers!

What do other members think?

Hi Reg

Well I for one agree with every point that you've made there.

I often joke that when still water fish go off the feed when they are in breeding mode, it's only the juvenile and sexually lazy fish that get caught.

I also joke that the Close Season is a throw back to when the Landed Gentry wanted the Salmon all to themselves.

Ironic that adult Salmon only visit fresh water when they are in full breeding mode with an instinct so strong that they end up dying from exhaustion and skin emaciation anyway once they've achieved their goal. smiling
