Smudger - every Severn stretch has barbel, but the Lower river can be notoriously difficult to get going early season. You have both above and below Worcester options, Holt Fleet/Grimley/Hallow, and then Severn Stoke/Ripple etc further down. If you've never caught a barbel before, then the middle river is a better bet, but the Lower river might offer a bit more peace and quiet. Feeders/straight leads will work. Start with pellets, I use 10mm, but on the Lower you can get pestered with bream, so have 14 and 16mm options also, plus boilies/double boilies, and don't ignore meat either.

If you do concentrate on the Lower river, be prepared for blanks, and plenty of them, but it makes the successes far more rewarding.
