Korum have just brought out a new bait dropper and I was able to get hold of one yesterday.
For all you barbel anglers out their it looks ideal for getting a bed of bait out on the river bed quickly and accurately.

Roll on the start of the new season where I will be trying it out at Fladbury. Not long now before we can all get back on the river bank

Sure it’s a silly question,
but what’s the benefit over a old fashioned bait dropper?
Do you need a dedicated bopper rod or does it hook on your end tackle!
made mine out of a tuna tin!

Re: Korum Bopper

In answer to your question Mr Toad because of the aerodynamic shape it won't make a big splash when entering the water. So hopefully you wont be spooking the fish. Also with a bit of practice I think you should be able to cast further and stay accurate at the same time when trying to feed a swim. In the past if I know I will be fishing in to darkness I will use about a gallon of hemp in the summer months before it gets dark. Then I wait for at least one hour before casting out.
In the hope that by the time I am ready to cast my bait in to the water. The barbel will have their heads down and feeding.

You cant beat those summers nights fishing under the stars waiting for you rod to loop around.

I have a rod that I use for flood water fishing which I find is plenty strong enough to cope with casting out bait droppers.

I think the tackle companies are taking folks for a ride. A dollop of groundbait squeezed on your lead and your line clip does the same job, gets loose feed round your hook. Happy days.

RiverNovice. Indeed chap, I'm old and grumpy and increasingly cynical about all the stuff out there, I've bought plenty of it in the past but don't think any of it made any difference to my catch, if folks like gadgets and enjoy using them that's fine, the object is to have a nice day out. After fishing for nearly 60 + years I came to the conclusion all you need to catch is food on the hook and hungry fish. I think each to their own sums it up, just enjoy it.

PS I have a dozen rods supposedly for different tactics, half those bought within the last three years (why I ask myself) sucked in by reading you need this that and the other, I think I catch less now than when I just had one float rod and one ledger rod ...... simple is best.

I have to agree gb with what you say. We all make choices with the way we fish as long as you are fishing within the rules. The problems starts when some body tells you that you cant do this or you cant do that.Just because they don't agree with it.

Re: Korum Bopper - just read the Compleat Angler by Izzak Walton

I have read with interest the many comments raised in response to the Korum Bopper.

The tackle industry will always be looking to adapt, improve or innovate, the fishermen that catch the fishermen!

I am still trying to master the Avon Centre Pin reel that belonged to my late fishing mate my dad who first introduced me to drowning worms in the Avon at Tewkesbury before the age of five!

I caught Perch from a Cow drink using a 4ft Woolworths rod, and I was hooked.

Just like gb123 I have bought my fair share of tackle over many years, but now going back to basics and seeing what I can catch using old style techniques and minimal tackle.

Keep on Fishing

Re: Korum Bopper

Well Reg Tewkesbuury has been my local stamping ground for the last few years too. I grew up alongside the Bristol Avon, and like you only fished the simplest of methods with either worm or maggots when my pocket money stretched that far.

Used to cycle from my Bristol home to Keynsham or Saltford and sometimes a bus ride to Bath. How I was not killed by lorries I dont know along the busy A4.But the fishing did seem a lot easier back then, even with crude tackle, my home made glass rod, and clunky 'pin' seemed to catch better then than all the modern expensive gear we invest in now.

Perhaps we have made a rod for our own backs in employing deft methods and the fish have become more spooky|? Or dare say cleaner rivers can have the downside of being able to see better...not that I am advocating for dirty rivers.
1lb plus Roach were common, and along with all species, at Keynsham Trout were often caught which for the lower river was exceptional, even saw a Salmon shoot the weir.

That said, this particular piece, the Bopper!! will hopefully replace my metal droppers that have a tendency to open on the cast or not open at all, I use them to put down a bed of bait to hopefully keep an evening Barbel or two occupied in my swim before continuing upstream for the night.

But I do agree with the sentiment that perhaps we have lost our way somewhat and getting back to basics will if not catch more make us happier, wealthier, and perhaps a better angler?

Good luck. (Issac)grin

I''ve just seen this vidoe on You Tube ? Looks like it was filmed at Severn Stoke ? It looks ideal to use on the Severn and the W/Avon to get bait quickly down on the bottom and get the barbel into your swim and feeding smiling

With lower numbers of big fish, particularly in the Warks Avon near me(I assume it's the same elsewhere),are big beds of bait still the way to go? Isn't there a risk of "feeding off" the one or two fish that do turn up? I know it used to work when big shoals of Barbel used to turn up and had to compete for food. Now? Not so sure. Will be trying the small amount of feed, smelly bait approach this season. Can't be worse than the "fill it in" approach I have been using for years, that failed miserably last season.
I don't night fish, only do 3-4 hour evening just into dark sessions.

Re: Korum Bopper

I have found in the past that putting down a bed of hemp with no pellets or boillies just hemp, Any thing up to a gallon at a time in the summer and then resting the swim for up to one hour before I start to fish.Barbel are suckers for hemp. I would never use that much in the winter. Its still possible to catch any thing from one to two or maybe three fish in a session.

You are right Baldy man the numbers are not there. There are still fish to be caught on the Warks Avon places like Fladbury, Nafford and Bidford, Also on the Lower Severn,Cant comment on the middle Severn I've not fished it for a while. It also helps if you can fish into darkness.

I would suggest that in the summer months barbel are more likely to be on the move looking for food unlike in the cold winter months. So the theory is that once they come across my bed of hemp they will stop and get there heads down and start feeding with the hope of catching one or two or maybe three fish
