Re: Nafford and eckington

I've fished Nafford a few times for barbel but not recently, about 2 or 3 years ago. Just caught the odd one or two up to 6lb. Also caught chub and bream.

Was chatting to the bailiff on one session, he reckon there's some really big barbel in there, but I've not managed to connect with one yet.

He also said that the area immediately below the weir is very snaggy and therefore not worth bothering with. I've mostly fished about 100 yards below the weir opposite the point of an island.

Good luck if you try it, I'll be back one day to try and get one of the monsters!

Re: Nafford and eckington

Nafford was very good up until a couple of years ago, however catching barbel from Nafford now is a struggle, and of course there are Otter there, I have seen Otter a couple of times in the water, and plenty of Otter prints. It's a shame because it screams Barbel, but the reality is very different.
The weir is snaggy, very snaggy, perhaps if you buried your hook in meat it might work, with shot on the line, but oddly it never has produced much at all.
Above the Weir it is deeper, and rarely fished, however I feel it could benefit from more bait going in!!! So any contributions would be greatly appreciated. This stretch you need to park your car in the main car park, and walk up the road and thru' the gate into the meadow, lots of sheep for company. But lots of virgin 'pegs' to go at. Some big Carp!!
Eckington, again struggles for Barbel, but not fished much, even the BAA matches are a thing of the past, suggest you walk upstream to the 'Swan Neck' if you like preds...some good bream all along though.

I was meaning Nafford mate...above the Weir. Some reports of some good Carp coming out after a lot of baiting.

Re: Nafford and eckington

I've found in the past it's good to travel light when fishing Nafford and move around a bit, there's so many good spots it doesnt pay to get bogged down in one place all day, some reasonable pike just after the snaggy bit where the water calms down, nice Perch if you can bounce a ledger off the wall where the boats tie up (or even work a small lure or spoon), Chub below the point of the island...it's a place where it pays to think slightly differently and experiment a bit, suffice to say I've never blanked there.

Fished Eckington Wednesday, even went to the effort of prebaiting Tuesday evening arrived @ 4am expecting a Bream fest but was a struggle (needs some water) had just the 1 Slab, 3 Skimmers, 1 Chub & Lots of snotty Perch & Bleak.
