New Salmon rules

River Severn anglers have been banned from taking their catch of salmon home with them under new by-laws.

The Environment Agency (EA) catch and release rules came into force along the length of the river this week, in a bid to protect dwindling salmon stocks.

Strange that there is no sign of an end to the massive over fishing of the Bristol Channel or of an otter management policy, when both of these issues are far more important to the survival of salmon stocks than the handful of fish removed by anglers each year.

Agreed. It's the standard lip service that the EA give to just about everything. Their Facebook page is an example of this, last week they posted about illegal cars and their parts polluting the environment, at the same time whilst they permit the dumping of sewage into our rivers.

They are not fit for purpose.

Re: New Salmon rules

Similar thing happened with bass, although that was EU enforced.

A shore angler can't take a bass, but a Dutch trawler can come and take as many tonnes as they want, then bugger of back to Holland with them and we don't see a penny.

Having said that, when there is an issue you'd like to think people would be sensible and do what they can to reduce their impact anyway. Especially a relatively small, exclusive group such as salmon anglers. At least if it happens and things don't improve they will be forced to look at other factors.

Re: New Salmon rules

Sorry but that's wrong, you can take 2 bass a day as long as they're over 42cms

March to November yes. December to February is catch and release. And those rules are now more lenient than when first bought in. Originally it was a 6 month C&R period and a 1 fish limit outside of that IIRC.

Either way, 2 bass per angler vs a huge net full...

The ea do anything they won't I fish for elvers on the Severn and have done for 40 years the ea stopped all elver fishing on all the Welch waters reason there is an invasive shrimp .my local fishing club have had to stop fishing there waters ea reason invasive crayfish .now I can fish for elvers on the Severn but can't sell them as they won't allow exports as they are endangered even tho 40% go for restocking I can still fish and eat what I catch .I hate to say it slowly the ea are stopping fishing

John is right, the ea are a waste of time and need a complete overhaul with the fishing side of the organisation.I have reported dozens of incidents over the last couple of years and had no feedback at all.I’ve been promised they will send bailiffs out to do joint patrols with us which never happen. When you do ring up to report something I’ve had to explain the laws around fishing to them! The people answering the phones have no knowledge about fishing whatsoever.Considering how much money they get put of us from license sales we deserve more.As said above not fit for purpose whatsoever.
