One for the eel anglers

Personally I can't stand them, but for those who can this may be of interest. Decided to try some luncheon meat infused with hemp oil via standard freezing in bag technique trying for barbel as they like meat and hemp so seemed a good mix. Went to Hampton Loade with a view to working my way back to car park trying some swims here and there along the way. I started at the peg below spinney above waterworks in 3/4ft water about two rodlengths out on a low clear river on a very bright sunny afternoon. In four cast in 25mins I hooked 4 eels, landing 2, at 14ins and 18 ins approx but not a barbel all day. A few weeks later I tried the same bait on the Ribble in Lancs at Ribchester village stretch again in bright sunlight early afternoon and fast shallow water, first cast another eel about 16ins, 40 mins later another over 20 ins long, at which point I went back to pellets. Interestingly the bailiff who came along said not many eeels were caught on that stretch normally so 2 in 40 mins was very unusual? Food for thought for our anguilla anguilla loving anglers perhaps, just thought I might as well share it as it might help someone catch a nice eel.

Sorry should have said 3/4in cubes of meat on a size 4 hook to avoid the chublets.

Great stuff Falcon, I think there's quite a few eels in the Severn as I often talk to Barbel anglers who have had the odd one, I never get any although that's not likely on stick float. I guess those back eddies are havens for them and I often see suspicious bubbles in the still bits when sitting on the rocks trotting below.

You would think even a big eel would have a smaller gob than chublets so how they get large chunks of meat down would be a sight. Lets hope they don't disappear from the Severn like other rivers where they are rare now

Re: One for the eel anglers

I've had a reasonable number of eels from the Severn but they tend to be about a pound or larger, none of the boot laces that were common before. I don't think that's down to bait size as I often use 6 or 8mm pellets.

I used to specifically fish for large eels during the old close season when you couldn't do anything else. Now you can fish still waters all year round I'd rather spend the time going after tench..
