There’s a significant lack of unhooking mats in all photos too may I add

I often think it’s massive overkill sometimes with the mat police and the fish handling “experts”,but I have to agree on this one, doesn’t look good at all.The gill covers shouldn’t be bent out that angle.Poor handling.

Yeah, it doesn't look too good but I'm sure the fish came to no harm.

Just to add though, just because a mat isn’t visible in the picture it doesn’t mean one wasn’t used to unhook it.There are many photos on the Barbel society pages where mats aren’t visible in the photo.

Stew, don't you think this obsession with mats has gone way too far? Soft grass is by far a safer place to lay a fish for unhooking, with the landing net beneath of course. Zero risk of spreading infection!!!!
All the coverage about keepnets spreading diseases but yet an unhooking mat taken from venue to venue is ok. Even placing a fish on one that has some sort of parasite infection, then using the same mat for another healthy fish risks spreading problems.
After all, no one would sleep in a hotel bed without the sheets being changed first!!!!........lol
Just my thoughts

Re: pike pic . shocking fish handling.

Totally agree Brummymoorey as I said previously it’s ridiculous sometimes the criticism people get from the mat police.Yes there are times/conditions when a mat should be used but when it’s at the point that people are getting criticised for not having one visible in the photo it’s over the top.

Unless I’m going to weigh or photograph a fish more often than not the fish won’t even leave the landing net and I’ll unhook it between my legs.Obviously larger fish shouldn’t be left on gravel flapping about and situations like that a mat should be used. But it’s an interesting point you make about the spread of disease on mats as I’d think mats left wet then used at various other fisheries would surely carry a massive risk of spreading disease?
