Does anyone know how the pools are fishing at the moment?

I've been planning to go after some tench but I'm not sure which the best pool(s) would be?

Is it still a bit too cold for them?

Which method and bait is best to use?

Thanks

Re: Tench pools

Hi, pool 2 at retreat is supposed to be dedicated to tench and crucians but has never had good feedback for whatever reason, I had a look last year it was very weedy and the only ones fishing were half a dozen herons!
It would be nice if the baa could make this work, as it's a nice alternative from the carpsmiling

Re: Tench pools

Went to Retreat Tuesday, 7 others there when I arrived. 4 on pool 1, 3 on pool 2. Not a bite between us. Heard of small ones on 2 but I have tried 3 times since the re opening, nothing.

Re: Tench pools

It says that there are tench at Nordley, I fished there last year for carp and didn't have much luck, has anyone had any tench there?

Anyone know how it is fishing in general?

I might have to give it a go in the next couple of weeks.

You'll struggle to target tench in any of the BAA's pools but as your username suggests that you're in my neck of the woods, Kinver Freeliner's apparently have some nice tench pools. Alternatively, The Stack Pool (a park lake, with lots of people around) in Kidderminster has a head of tench that were stocked a couple of years ago. Other than that, Swan Pool in Sandwell Valley produces a few - put it's very exposed if the weather turns.

Kinver have Dudmaston which is OK, nothing more. I found it very Peggy. Bag up or blank kind of place.2-3lb average but good fun on the float. Pretty place but full of walkers, and weirdos with cameras who think it's ok to come and shove their camera in your face without asking. That put me off quite a bit, so if you want a quiet day I'd give it a swerve. The closed season is also observed there. I don't recall any of their other waters being worth targeting tench specifically. Things may have changed, but I found it an overhyped club and didn't renew.

I think its a struggle these days to find decent fishing that isn't carp oriented. My advice would be to find a club with some gravel pits and fish those. You won't get huge numbers but its usually quieter and bigger fish.

Re: Tench pools

Sticking with BAA pools for tench, it's Mythe or Uckinghall every time for me. Mythe has a good head of them, but there's times I've been when conditions appear to be ideal and not had a bite from any tench. Though there's a lot of decent bream in there also, which are a back up if the tench aren't feeding. Similar with Uckinghall.

Baits I use are nothing special - sweetcorn, worms, bread. I've had a few decent ones on luncheon meat too - both tench and bream. I don't usually bother with maggots so not sure how you'd get on with them.

Re: Tench pools

Thanks for all the responses, I will have to try the stack pool

I know someone who has been on the freeliners waiting list for about 3 years! So I don't think I'd have much of a chance for a while and I don't think they do day ticket any more

I will have to give Mythe a go, I was planning on trying Uckinghall for predators in the winter but didn't want to go too far with covid

I did try the KDAA pool a couple of weeks ago but just had 1 bream all day and nobody else caught but it was still a bit cold so I will try that again

Re: Tench pools

If the fees are the same as last year, the club that runs the Stack Pool was charging £5 per day or £25 for the year.
Most of the tench seem to come fishing hard up against the lilies (they're just coming up), which means that you will be fishing next to the path. It isn't massively busy, but you will need to keep any meat baits covered and be careful about baited hooks on the bank because of dogs.
The spur of land that separates the two parts of the pool is much quieter, but while I've had bream and carp from there, I've not seen any tench come out.

If you do try Mythe, once the weather warms up, you're probably best to try early morning or evening.

Re: Tench pools

Fished No2 pool at Retreat for a few hours this afternoon.

Found a clear area 14.5 metres out on the track side and fed crumb. Small crucians and Rudd to 8oz on punched bread and meat. Bites few and far between but water is very cold.

Spoke to a few on No 1 and not a bite

Thanks for that Chris. 257 views on my "Retreat" thread and not a single reply.
