Having started fishing again after a forty year gap I am using a set of 14' Sealey Blue Match Special Match Rods I bought in 1972/3 I also use a set of Slapton Apollo steel rods from the 1950's / 1960's for ledgering I have caught Barbel Bream and Chub on the latter, the Sealeys I use for all my river float fishing. I have purchased a lot of new tackle but most of it to be honest is plastic and rubbish. I have bought a lot of second hand tackle from the 70's / 80's for no money and the build quality is excellent. I sold a lot of my dads vintage rods and reels ( ABU & Mitchel ) and I wish I had kept them. Is anyone else still using very old tackle and getting good catches ?

Re: Vintage Fishing Tackle

I haven't brought a new rod for over 10years now but I must admit the quality of the modern carbon rods is excellent, however a lot of the tackle I use is from the 80s era,I guess if you look after your tackle it will serve you just as well as the modern stuff, I've got 3 Abu 500 closed faced reels, dam carboron float rod, dam quickstick float rods, dam telesnatcher poles, any one remember the AS1 seat box from the 80s they were just about the first continental seat to launch in the uk and were quite expensive compared to the more common Shakespeare boxs? still use them today they do the job still catch fish, well most of the time!

Re: Vintage Fishing Tackle

Happy to see other people using vintage tackle, I've been mainly fly fishing for the last thirty or so years and decided to start coarse fishing again a couple of years back. I also bought an Edgar Sealey blue match from a boot sale (got three now) just for trotting with an old ABU 506 that I've had for years and really enjoy it. I also acquired a couple of glass rods from the sixties and a wicker creel that I use on canals and it's surprising how many people stop for a chat about the old tackle, the only problem is it's turning into a bit of an obsession and hardly use my moder n tackle now.
