4x4 wrecking machines!!

Todays' ever popular 4x4s are causing massive damage to the fields where we can drive to the pegs.
Wasperton and Birds Meadow are prime examples!
Because 4x4s are so good over rough ground, they are creating deep ruts, which, if a normal cars' wheels went into them, they would bottom-out and probably need a tractor to rescue them.
This may happen even if the ground is dry.
Where any route across a field can be taken, it is not too bad, but where a certain route has to be followed, 4x4s are creating big problems.
The one and only time I visited Birds Meadow, there were ruts up to 20 inches deep, I have not been back!
I feel that the BAA will have to ''bite the bullet'' and dig deep and purchase many tons of hardcore to rectify this problem - a big and costly job!
If they don't then the massive plus point of being able to drive to a peg will only be available to the owners of the ground wrecking 4x4s!

Re: 4x4 wrecking machines!!

its not simply the fact they are 4 x 4 its the way they get driven, as you say Wasperton has some big ruts, some of which were caused by a range rover revving life crazy and going faster than was really required cutting huge ruts. The cost to dhardcore places like that would be massive, as with Fladbury etc. Maybe the answer is to ban all cars after prolonged wet spells with just a hardcore parking area. Bit of a pain when like me your getting old and arthritic.

Re: 4x4 wrecking machines!!

as most things in life, you will find its the drivers who dont know how to "drive" thats the problem. if the ground is so soft that a near 2 ton 4x4 is sinking/ leaving huge ruts then a responsible 4x4 driver wouldn`t go across,
yes i have 4x4 trucks and lots of real "off road" experience .
birds meadow has been like that for a few years, same as salford , yet instead of driving through the puddles, people drive "around" them. making it worse.

Seems little point in spending money filling these ruts with hard core only for it to end up in the river when they flood. Couldn't the BAA get the farmers to run them over during the closed season with something to help flatten or level bad areas if they have such equipment. Just a thought.

I cannot see any problem whereby decent sized rubble would end up in the river!
This may be true on rivers and streams where flash floods occur, but not with the type of floods our waters experience.

There is another concern apart from use by vehicles and this is human access.
The BAA may say that members use these waters ''at their own risk'' , but this may not be the case unless they have taken reasonable efforts to reduce that known said risk.
These fields tend to have access by other parties such as walkers, dog walkers, farm workers etc and when very deep ruts grass over there is the danger of stepping into them and a high risk of breaking a leg.
It is just plain common sense and good management to remove this obvious risk, to any person lawfully using these fields.
