was over that way this weekend at green man festival at clun , great day out .
Decided to have look at walcot lakes , first time saw it an instantly fell in love with the place !!!
never ever in all my 40 odd years off fishing , seen such a place with so much peace an tranquillity . I noted the water quality was excellent , crystal clear and small amounts off pond weed , the perfect combination for specimen fish , an ideal tench water .

then next signs saying carp syndicate on both pools , spoke to chap fishing informed me carp are being stocked . instantly I thought oh my god not another carp puddle , to the detriment off our native tench .

why the baa have given up such a special place like walcot is totally beyond me !!!!!!

weed problem they say ??? best months for tench april ,may early june . no weed problem then . even after that the best groundbait for tench is rake a swim 1 or 2 hours raking will drive tench into a frenzy !!!!!
I have observed this on my local wyrley Essington canal I have watched tench home in a frenzy as rake hits bottom .

such a sad sad loss , was this put to a members vote ??????

Re: BAA has given up walcot lake

Yes mate it is a stunning venue for sure but is void of fish.
Was debated on here in previous posts if you go back through them.
I used to fish here 15/25 years ago with some great Tench fishing it was a real joy, mixed species venue. Sadley the weed took over with very few people fishing the place. Over the years its become painfully shallow with cormarents emptying the place year on year. Could be a great venue again with plenty of cash thrown at it.
The members wouldnt have voted on it pal any desisions would have been made by the committee
with the best interests of the club, and the club moving forwards. Sad to see it go but in my opinion the right decision.

Re: BAA has given up walcot lake

yes I agree right decision for a maggot water fish a chuck .
but from a specimen point off view low biomass off fish , equals less fish but off a larger average specimen size .

I take note the weed issue but again the amount off inverterbrates the weed supports is amazing.
to prove this rake a swim an look in weed , it crawls with life . an ideal environment for specimen fish .
I have fished these difficult waters before , an had good results during the months off april ,may an up to mid june before the weed takes full control.
I have found on these waters the method , or grub maggot feeder with method mix around it as well , with 6" hooklink to size 10 hook with rubber corn @ maggot , with few live maggots on hook was all that was needed during these prime tench months .
my guess is members turning up at wrong times an months ?
too late now any way , but I would rarther have sat at walcot , than any carp puddle hole in ground with easy fishing , which gets boring any way .

I think the syndicate that took it over were rubbing there hands as they realised , the specimen potential an quality off the crystal clear water .

only shame is looks like its to be stocked with carp an another natural estate lake is to be taken over by carp , but there we go that's seems be what new generation off anglers want .

to me the tench should be protected . the grey squirrel wiped out the red . American crayfish are native , an so on in years to come the carp will take over across the country an the expense off our native species .

I would like to see English nature step in if rare plants flowers etc can be protected , then why not our native fish species ?

would rarther sit in peace an tranquillity at walcot an just contemplate catching a fish , than sit on some carp muddy puddle any day , but that's just me , I grew up with fishing not being easy , try fishing the arboretum lake in Walsall , an that's not even scenic.

Re: BAA has given up walcot lake

over years have fished many scenic an special lakes across mids an Derbyshire .
Melbourne lake derbys , switherland res leics , but never seen any were so special as walcot an don't think ever will again .
oh did fish private pool outside welshpool early 80 s which was 2nd to walcot around 7 acres in size on private estate , but holiday makers an caravaners put stop that , due to litter was all done on trust , just had put 2 quid in post box by his house on estate .
was all abused the lake never been fished since around 1984.
now that was special also all species in there pike , bream , roach ,perch an handful carp .

Re: BAA has given up walcot lake

i travel from near redditch or tewkesbury to walcott lake, so 120 or 150 mile round trip
would stay at camp site at the pub a few times but does get booked lots. hence wish could have night fished when baa had lease.
tench and bream are my fav fish, yet in all the years fishing iv never had a double figure bream ! thou iv fished some top places over the years , sywell, tring reservoirs, lots of different rmc / cemex waters and a good few down cotswolds
old estate lakes are my fav places, then drains and slow rivers.

Re: BAA has given up walcot lake

Agree with you on carp pools I have no interest in them at all if your looking for hard pool venues your in the right club as often you can fish some of theses BAA pools and not get a bite.

If you have not fished Walcot mate dont see how you can comment on it yes it looks the part and if it was just a case of racking a few swims and catching clonking tench I doubt the club would have given it up.

As you know the weed gives out O2 during the day and absorbes it during the night this makes it hard going for any big fish. A lot of the swims were no more than 2ft deep at 12/13 metres out from the bank. And if you look at the posts on the venue from before you will see a guy had a boat out on there with it being totally silted up all over and no fish activity found in the gin clear water.

Maybe you should join the syndicate who have it now and let us know how many clonking tench you have out just a thought

Re: BAA has given up walcot lake

COPIED this for you pal its PETE JS post others on here if you look back through. Tried to post a link to the post but it didnt work hope you dont mind me copy pasting it Pete.

I've fished Walcot a few times with a good friend Graeme, usually on a fine summer evening looking for big tench.

In three visits in the last three years, I've caught two small rudd and no tench, Graeme has had one on and lost it (possibly a carp).

In July this year I had the pleasure of staying in the Garden House at Walcot Hall, complete with use of the rowing boats on the BAA lake.

On a still day with polaroids on, I rowed the lake for a couple of hours. No-one fishing, but two swims had been raked between the trees opposite the boat house island.

The water was gin clear and still, meaning I could see to the bottom for at least 20 metres away from the boat in each direction.

In 3 hours, I saw 5 fish. One 4 oz pike in the margins, 2 cruising carp at 10 lbs plus, and 2 very old sick-looking bream, probably about 4-5 lbs, I could get close enough to touch them before they moved off slowly. Nothing topping anywhere, even into the evening.

Much of the lake is now less than 1 ft deep, with 3-4 feet of thick, yellow silt on the bottom and is almost entirely weeded to the surface.

The deepest sections, only around 3 ft, were equally weeded with no sign of fish.

There are loads of snails on the weed and silt, and a fair number of freshwater mussels on the bottom.

All in all, the water looked barren and very sickly, much in need of some attention.
