Right all,
As we have a lot of members that travel to our waters from all 4 corners to fish our lovely barbel waters it would be a good idea to share our thoughts and opinions on where is the best place to head for and what are the best baits.

I have only fished a couple but one of my favourites is Knowle Sands..

Re: The Best venue for Barbel...Question!

Im looking to catch my first river barbel and have decided I will fish Knowle Sands for this can you guys help me and tell me if this is a place where I fish match style (bring all my kit, seatbox etc) Or am i better with just a rod, chair, landing net, mat etc ?

Also do i pick a peg and fish it all day or do i go to a few different pegs?

Any help would be great thank you. Steve

you wont need your match gear. A rod (or two), rucksack with all your bits in it. landing net etc, etc.

If you fish Knowle Sands 1&2 you'll need to travel light anyway, as the hill is a killer. Regarding tactics, you'll probably be better off moving around at the moment, with the river being low, and I almost certainly wouldnt bother fishing before 6pm in the heat.

Take pellets, meat and a few boilies, or even caster and hemp if you prefer. I've got a video blog, and a few of my vids are actually at Knowle Sands.

thank you thats great, Am i better in 1&2 or shall i wonder further as well? I'am a complete noub when it comes to barbel fishing. Am I looking for deep holes and fishy looking areas to cast to or close in the margins or am I chucking arcoss or down the middle? Like I say id normally be fishing for the small silvers & bream so groundbait feeder an maggot is more me so I better not clip up smiling

What is your blog please I would like to check it out. Many Thanks Steve

We have fished Knowe Sands three times this season we had 4 first time and then other 4, but last week could only
manage one fish and I have not had one on meat yet all caught on pellets or boilies. They call that hill down cardiac hill.

most of my fish last week at Knowle came on meat strangely, I struggled on other baits. Every day is different.

Do we as anglers need to know the best venues, bait etc to catch Barbel? Surely half the fun is seeking out these things for ourselves? Not saying we have to be ultra secret, but don't think broadcasting info on the net is going to help anyone or anything.

Re: The Best venue for Barbel...Question!

Trouble is one is never enough I suppose, but have made barbel my target species for the last 15 years or so, which I admit is just too long in neglecting the other species in particular Roach and Tench.

Barbel are under pressure at the moment, what with Otter and other preds including poachers, so as I said any barbel is a bit of a prize and that last thing we want to do is alert locations to those with a less sporting instinct than perhaps you and I.

However it is difficult to catch a barbel to order, but I reckon if you are up for it we could manage a few without much effort, I would be more than happy to try and help.

Send me some contact details if you like and perhaps you could help me with a Tench or two?
