Can't find one!!!

Looking to replace my well over 20 year old,12' 1.75tc,Drennan Light Carp rod. After catching thousands of fish on it,including,Barbel to over 15lb,Chub to over 7lb,Pike to 27lb and Carp to 19lb,it is feeling a little softer in its action. As if the mid and but section is tired.
What I need is the same features it once had, fine, sensitive tip with a progressively stiffer mid to but action. Same length and tc,quality rings and reel seat,to be paired with and be well balanced with 4000 size Shimano reels.
I can't find anything suitable, don't want interchangable quiver tips(a pet hate of mine),don't really want a "Barbel" rod, looked a couple and they tend to be too stiff from tip to but. Must be two piece.
Suggestions please,budget around £160.
Thanks.

Re: Can't find one!!!

Hi BM,
Blimey that was / is some rod!
For your information
There is a traditional tackle shop on the corner of Chester Road and Beech Road,
postcode B23 5QN, up in North Birmingham not far from where I live.

Gold Label Tackle, they do make rods to order.

So they might be worth a call.

Keep on fishing

Re: Can't find one!!!

Thanks Reg,will see if I can find out more about them. It still is a brilliant rod,in very good condition cosmetically,a polish with Mr Sheen every couple of weeks works wonders, just seems to have lost a bit of "umph",not surprising really the use it has had. Does carbon fibre get "tired?" Vaguely recall reading somewhere a few years ago something about the bonding resin failing over time. Anyway, would be sad to break it,better to retire it. I think it has earned it.

Re: Can't find one!!!

Have a look at Drennan duo rods . They are a great range . They have an Avon top and push in quiver tip section

Re: Can't find one!!!

Thanks for the suggestion Bazpeck. If the Duo was just an Avon I would seriously consider one. Don't want to pay for a quiver section that I would never use.

Re: Can't find one!!!

In that case look at Korum rods . Not the quality of Drennan but they have options .
Aldi half the price of Drennan ..

Re: Can't find one!!!

I already have two Korum rods,a 0.75lb tc Expert 11'. Fantastic slim, light rod with a lovely action that I have caught double figure Barbel and Carp on. Only downside to it is I can't chuck big feeders on it. Other one is a Korum Barbel rod,12' 2lb tc that is very, very stiff and heavy. Got it to chuck BIG feeders in floodwater on the Avon. Perfect for that with a 6000 size Shimano baitrunner, but not a pleasure to use due to the lamp post like action. It's what put me off Barbel rods..
Before lock down,I did reserve a Korum Expert,12',1.5lb tc rod a a local tackle shop, but, due to the pandemic, never got to pick it up. Only remembered a couple of days ago, going to pop in later and see if they still have it. Fingers crossed. Failing that I'll be off to Aldi.

Re: Can't find one!!!

Went to tackle shop, they said they had sold it,not on their stock list. While browsing the rod racks I found it!!! For £20 less than when I reserved it. Well chuffed. Roll on June 16th when I can try it.

Re: Can't find one!!!

Looks a nice rod, the sort I like to use, I have a unused Drennan specialist Barbel Avon at 175 t.c that I bought a few years back from a tackle shop that was closing down sadly. Might give it an airing this season, Drennan do some nice gear. Another favourite rod of mine, aside from the normal, is the old green Fox rods, I have a couple of the Barbel Plus, the tips are light and responsive, but it has a great lower down grunt, great for bigger lumps but also for smaller fish, good feeder rod.
Hope you christen yours with a p.b grin

Re: Can't find one!!!

The older Drennan rods were much better quality than those produced today, same could be said for most things I guess. My 0.75lb tc Expert rod is a lovely thing to play fish on,hoping the 1.5lb tc will be as good. As for breaking pb's,ain't going to happen. All my best river fish were caught quite a few (5-7) years ago(pb Pike 27lb 3oz was caught from the Avon 15 years ago)when there were far more big fish around. The last 3-4 years have seen dramatic decline in big fish stocks round here. Gone are days of 8-10 double figure Barbel in a 15 fish,3 hour session.
We keep trying though. Anglers, the ultimate optimists.

Re: Can't find one!!!

Tell me about it, I think we can agree that as far as barbel are concerned, it seems the WA is a hard venue nowadays. So rather than just target them I enjoy mixing it up a bit with a maggot feeder or trotting a float.
The occasional big barbel that comes out, is largely old solitary females, however I have seen reports of spawning and the rarer smaller males making an appearance, hope that is true.
My usual venues that produced at least a couple of Barbel in a session, are now ruined by those that think it OK to treat it like a water race track, free swimmers kyaks and paddle boarders, but rest assured we have the close season to protect nature.
The spawning areas are being ruined by careless folk, is it any wonder fish stocks suffer?

Would this be any good?

Why must it be 2 section when you were happy with your old 3 section?

Mork, thanks for your input. I have now found a rod that will, hopefully do the job. My old Drennan light Carp is a two piece.

Re: Can't find one!!!

OK - I misunderstood when you wrote (quote) "As if the mid and but section is tired", implying that it's a 3 section.
I have no idea what the 'mid section' of a 2 section rod is?awkward

Re: Can't find one!!!

As in the action of the rod, power in tip,mid or but. My Drennan feels softer(bends more than it used to,not as much "backbone") in the mid and but.
