Yes, heard it off Dave Harrell. What a farce.

Re: Close season to stay

My understanding is that a very small proportion of anglers bothered to take part in the EA survey / consultation and that there was no real consensus in views given - certainly no great outcry or demand to get rid of Close Season. Based on this feedback I am sure that the EA had no desire to investigate further. As usual apathy reigns, but I think the result is great. At a time when anglers are bemoaning falling fish stocks and in particular declining numbers of barbel, how on earth could anyone think that pursuing them for another three months a year, especially at a sensitive time, would be a good idea? There are a number of very popular sections which are quite pressured and there must be many repeat captures. Give the fish a rest - if you want to fish in the Spring, get onto the canals. The BAA has mile upon mile of virtually unfished canals with stocks of quality fish and the chance to fish using a different set of skills.

Re: Close season to stay

It didn't need scrapping, but did need the dates changing in my opinion. This season, we've been fishing for spawning barbel in July, and quite a few years just recently the fish have still been spawning on June 16th. Localised catches of 20 and 30 fish are evidence of this.

This spring was cold, nothing even thought about spawning until mid-May. the season should have been extended until mid-April, and start again in July at some point. The EA survey was never going to make any difference to anything anyway, whatever the results.

Re: Close season to stay

Yep if it ain't broke...

Changing the dates would never work either due to the differences in breeding times on rivers throughout the country and between all the species, we just have to take it as read that every now and then some species will be breeding whilst the season is on and may not do that well that year. Maybe it's a reason why there's missing year classes in fish sometimes?

There's an interesting part of the report that states that breeding chub and barbel when disturbed can retain their eggs and not spawn at all leading to a missed year of breeding

Re: Close season to stay

Terrible news. With nobody on the banks, the poaching will continue unabated.
To address some of the points raised, I find it shocking that people want to stop other anglers from fishing during the summer time because the species of non-native (to the Severn, Avon and Wye) fish that they want to catch happens to spawn late. I also find it laughable that anyone can call any BAA river venue "pressured" when back in the 70's and 80's, every peg on the middle Severn was taken every weekend and on popular sections, you would be hard pushed to find a peg even on a weekday - and the head of fish now is a fraction of what it was then.
