The weir pool at Fladbury seems to have a large number of snags beneath the water. Has anyone else found this? I have lost a lot of tackle there in recent days and have opted to fish the river instead. Do BAA have working parties to remove trees, etc, from the weir pool?

Unfortunately you will find any weir pool on any river very snaggy,I don’t think the work party have the capabilities to remove large trees from weir pools that have probably been brought down in floods.

I agree - weir pools fill up with 'stuff' that is washed over the weir during flood water. However, this weir pool seems to have more than its fair share under the surface and (in my opinion) is spoiling what could be one if the best barbel spots on the Avon? I would be interested in hearing from colleagues who have fished there recently?

You’re right it is a very snaggy weir I’ve lost tackle when piking there before. The problem would be anything that is further than a rope and grappling hook from the bank can’t reach would be impossible to get out safely, the small boats usually used wouldn’t be suitable to drag large objects out safely and I’m pretty sure bigger boats wouldn’t be allowed to go that close to the weir.

hi fella. yes its a very snaggy weir pool fladbury. its fairly shallow too.
but all those snags, old trees and metal pilings are a magnet for fish.
if you removed them.... you would make the fish move .

Fish somewhere else. Fladbury is not the only place on the Avon to catch a barbel.

Re: Fladbury Weir

Weir run offs normally fish better, and Fladbury is no exception. But the pool just below the weir sees a lot of attention, plenty of small Barbel apparently. The track to the downstream section is a nightmare!!, probably best to park in Jubilee Bridge car park and walk. There do seem to be a lot of fish at Fladbury, Pike Barbel the lot, probably down to all the feed that goes in from the Matches.

Re: Fladbury Weir

No more in Fladbury than anywhere else. There's not a stretch on the river that doesn't hold barbel. It's just that people are lazy so keep flocking to the same places.

Nafford, Wick and Bidford all have weirs and all do barbel, big ones too, but there's barely a soul to be seen. I think Nafford in particular has done fish over 13lb. Then there's all the stretches that don't have weirs. They all have barbel too. Weirs aren't the be all and end all but if people want to fish the same pegs every week it leaves all the other bits empty for me.

Fished many stretches of the Avon, and there seems to be more Barbel at Fladbury than any other stretch I have fished.. But far to busy for me, especially summer months. Agreed most stretches hold Barbel but numbers are down but that's the Buzz.

Not sure on the numbers. I've had the best two seasons of my life for barbel on the Avon and not a weir in sight. People need to get out there and explore the river. It's not always the obvious places that throw up the fish. If people want to go on flogging the likes of Marcliff, Nafford and Fladbury for the same fish then let them. They're missing out on a hell of a lot of river.

If you are the Lee I think you are, I know you said a couple of seasons ago, despite living close to a prolific stretch you go for the more out of the way stretches, so good on you. I must admit on being too focused on one stretch, but I was getting repeat captures, and that I don't like. The trick is to travel light, nothing worse in having to cart a tonne of kit around.
