Does anyone else run a float through as their no1 method of choice? I say this as I have been to Hampton Loade, Arley twice, Stanley and Kinlet and last week walked from Arley to Trimpley island with my float gear and of all the many anglers I have seen on the bank the only one float fishing was me. I think I saw one guy last season but we stood looking at each other in shock so that could have been me passing myself on the way back smiling

Thing is the fishing has been pretty darn good every trip and i'm not tiring of the three hour drive up each time. Good barbel on the float when the conditions are right are a joy and even if it's bright and clear the chub and big roach seem pretty reliable, both of which are abundant at the moment, not to mention the hordes of dace and pockets of rather good perch, with no boats (aside from the odd kayak) it really is a float anglers paradise so why does everyone sit with two heavy leads out?

Depends on the conditions for me. If the water's low and clear (like now) then I'll be on the float with maggots, casters (and tares if the roach start showing). Come a rise and some colour then I'll chase the barbel.

Re: Float fishing the Severn

I've spent a lot of time after the barbel on the lead so far this year but now is the time for hemp and tare for the roach. First trip last week wasn't great, shaking off the cobwebs I think.

Never got them on it if you know what I mean. It's always been a slow start bait for me, takes a couple of hours of steady feeding to get them going for it. I got roach on hemp but not really mad for it. and so the switch to tare for the better fish didn't happen.

I'm trying again next week in a different area. I need somewhere where the quality roach are close in to make the most of it.

This winter I want to concentrate on big chub. I'm surprised I haven't picked any up on pellet, most have been small fish. The big ones must be there.

Hi Hornet

I personally prefer running a float through every time if the conditions are right on a river. Until last season I had never landed a barbel on the float, but as you say when you do hook a "good barbel" and land it there's nothing better! What I have experienced when float fishing in these conditions on casters and hemp in particular is that the smaller first move in first, followed by the chub who are finally muscled out by the barbel. However when the river colours up it's leger and swim feeder time!

I nearly always use a float as long as the river is not flowing too fast, at least for most of the session and change to a lead or feeder if not much is happening, and always on canals. I always have two rods out so one is naturally floatless, you can't float fish two rods at a time. Float fishing is what I call proper fishing but each to his own.

Re: Float fishing the Severn

Great stuff guys the irony is after posting about not seeing any float anglers I saw two at Coombys farm this Saturday - Yeah I was the nutter who had managed to walk from Alveley Country park to Arley on the left bank tongue out Think I jinxed it with the comment about boats too as I'd never seen so many. Didn't affect the fishing as had a great day with my first 2lb roach of the season followed quickly by another! throw in some nice chub on a day when the barbel didn't seem to be showing it was a fantastic day I won't forget. Legs are aching now but thats a roving float session for yougrin

...and a very pleasant afternoon it was too (I was on one of the pegs closest to the car park at Coomby's), despite being hopelessly out of practice on the float! A nice bag of mixed small silvers (mainly dace but with a few roach, chub and inevitable bleak), although just a tad dissapointed that none of the better roach or chub made an appearance. A nice change from sitting behind two feeder rods - although here's hoping today's rain prompts a few inches and a bit of colour in the next few days.

Re: Float fishing the Severn

Hi good to see people having fun on the float and catching some good fish. Have been fishing for 50+ years and only fish running water 90 percent of the time with a float.
I and two friends from Hampshire are looking forward to our annual trip to the Severn in October. Would be good to catch some of those big roach!!

Re: Float fishing the Severn

Hornet, that sounds like a great days fishing. Do you mind me asking what bait you were using?

I'm interested in whether it was maggot/caster or pellet. Roving I would normally use the first two but the roach do seem to have a taste for pellet, I'm just not sure how quick the response to pellet would be in a roving situation.

Feel free to tell me to mind my own business.

I am currently in the middle of the Float Only league at Bewdley and I fish plenty of the Float Only matches later in the year. I know that this is not BAA water but just goes to show that plenty of people prefer to fish the float on the Severn. The league is a sellout with 54 entrants smiling
