Three men were fined and ordered to pay costs totalling more than £1,800 after they were caught fishing illegally in Tewkesbury.

irginijus Narutis, 50, of Foden Road, Birmingham, and 51-year-old Jevgenijs Rumjaceus, of Dora Street, Walsall, were both charged with fishing without a rod licence and taking, destroying or attempting to destroy or take fish from a private fishing pool or place with private fishing rights.
The case against Narutis was proved in his absence and he was fined £345 in total, while Rumjaceus pleaded guilty and was fined £500. They were both ordered to pay costs and victim surcharge totalling £157.47.
Mihails Rumjaceus, 44, of Talke Road, Walsall, pleaded guilty to wilful obstruction of a fisheries bailiff, fishing without a licence and failing to give his name and address to the bailiff. He was fined £375 and ordered to pay costs and victim surcharge totalling £280.
Cheltenham magistrates heard on Monday (25 February 2019) that the 3 men were out fishing together at Mythe Pool, Tewkesbury on 28 July last year when they were caught. Magistrates granted an order for all the angling equipment the 3 men had to be forfeited.

Let’s hope it acts as a deterrent but I doubt it.At least some have been caught and prosecuted.

Regrettably one of the three found guilty was a BAA member.

The BAA cooperated with EA in bringing these prosecutions.

would it not be a good idea to have to produce your fishing licence before purchasing your BAA card John??

.......".would it not be a good idea to have to produce your fishing licence before purchasing your BAA card John". Unfortunately BAA officials, and members, do not have the right to ask to see someones E.A. licence, only E.A. bailiffs and police officers can ask to see it.

A bailiff may not have the rights to enforce the law regarding a lack of an EA fishing licence but they certainly can ask a member to show their EA fishing licence, this is commonplace in many clubs.

In most cases the angler will be happy to show both his membership and EA licence, every now and then though you'll get a narky member who won't want to show the EA licence and they don't do anyone any favours long term, or they have something to hide. That's when the bailiff can contact the EA. I'm assuming something similar happened in this case as the odds of the EA rocking up at Mythe for a random licence check are pretty slim.

Sometimes you get member moaning that they've had to produce whilst wading mid river etc etc. Bottom line is the bailiffs do a good job with little resources at times so if you get checked be helpful and if you get checked twice or three times in a day by different bailiffs see it as a good thing

It is a BAA Bye-Law to be in possession of a current EA rod licence.
