Why do the admins of this forum insist on posting pictures of barbel captures that are nowhere near the stated weight? It's happened twice this last week or so, both of the same angler, one claiming a 12, and another of a supposed 16.12, which would constitute a river record.

Neither of these fish are the weights stated, so please could someone 'vet' these in some way.

I'm all for posting pictures of good fish up, I've posted plenty myself, but please, you ain't fooling anyone with some of the claimed weight of fish that have graced this website lately.

Re: Nonsense weights of barbel on this forum

I must admit Johnny, I saw the latest pic from Fladbury and thought the angler had made a mistake. The caption states 16lb 12oz - looks more like 6lb 12oz.
For the minute I'll give the guy benefit of doubt and guess it's a genuine mistake in both instances. The other being the 12lb fish which also looks nowhere near that weight.
I've never even fished Fladbury as from everything I read on here it sounds like it might be packed every weekend. Same reason I've not tried Stacklands.
Might try either sometime soon once all the fair weather anglers have given up for the year. I much prefer a little peace and solitude.
Good luck for the rest of the season!

Just seen these pics, really what a load of rubbish, the fact that these Barbel are no where near the weights claimed is one thing, but if they have to hold these Barbel at arms length, do it kneeling down. With members like this I doubt if those fish survived the ordeal, please Admin don't encourage this sort of b/s by posting this up.

Irony being with those Fladbury photos that the "12" looks a bigger fish than the "16". Must be using these doubling scales like I've got in the bathroom.

That 13 on another photo, from Wasperton, looks a cracking fish though.

Yeah, the Waspo fish is a stunner. He did eight sessions to get that fish too, so a deserved fish.

The weigh sling for the others must have had rocks in it, and big ones at that.

Re: Nonsense weights of barbel on this forum

IMO both fish are similar. Neither much more than 8 and that's at a push

Both are smaller than the severn 10.11

Seen some dreadful fish care with barbel this year especially at Fladbury.

Also, minimum size landing net sizes should now be brought in as a rule. With barbel it isn't so much their weight but their length. A 8lbs barbel will be of a length of a 20lbs carp. Match style pan nets lead to them being almost bent double in the net. Unhooking mats should also be compulsory when targeting barbel

Unhooking mats should be compulsory for any fish that needs to be laid down - carp, barbel, pike, zander, bream, chub, tench, whatever. Practising good fish care means conservation of healthy stocks and is a no-brainer in my book. So is taking home rubbish. The amount of discarded line I removed from the peg I fished at Fladbury earlier this week was nothing short of scandalous. Exaggerated weights, poor fish care and rubbish all over the place... no wonder anglers get a bad rep...

Agreed. Fladbury is the equal of the middle severn these days with the amount of idiots that grace the banks. I see it many times, match style pan nets as Ezam says, and, even worse, keepnets, which are a huge no-no for barbel. Autum is coming though, so hopefully the pressure will fade as the solar powered lot go back home until warmer times.

You could all be mistaken regarding the 16 3/4 lb barbel. the angler could be 9'6" tall !!!!!!!

I know mate, I usually try not to get involved in arguments about weights and the like, but this sort of thing really annoys me. It takes the shine off anyone who puts in time and effort to catch big barbel. I'd love to get a 15, let alone a 16.

Jokers like this one shouldn't be having pictures posted up on this site.

Re: Nonsense weights of barbel on this forum

Would have to agree that that fish does not look like 16lb!? I am sure that may be an error. I am the angler with the photo from Stacklands of the 8lb fish and that does not look double the size!

As for Stacklands, a lovely stretch of water. First time I fished there it was pretty quiet with only 3 people.

I fished there again a couple of weeks ago on a Monday and had the whole place to myself. . Perfect conditions and had a red letter day..... 2 x 5lb, 2 x 6lb, 1 x 7lb and my first double and PB of 10lb 8oz! Also a 4lb chub. This was all in the space of the afternoon!

I would not dream of fishing for Barbel or any other species to be honest without a mat and good sized net, I will be honest I thought this was already compulsory in the rule book.

Actually I think we need to go easy on the gentleman as that is very much a typo (either on his part or the BAA) as the photos of his other fish are bigger!

Is it really that important. Enjoy your fishing, post your pictures. They are all good fish, do I care how heavy they are. It's not a competition.

Then why bother 'weighing' them and publishing the pictures with a ridiculous overstated weight? He could have just caught them and slipped 'em back.
