Pensham advice

Like everyone else I’m hoping that we are allowed out by the time June 16th arrives. As my wife and I are both key workers this coming season will be appreciated all the more.
As I sit here making plans I’ve decided to give Pensham a go for a change. I’ve fished it just twice and caught some nice Bream. I like to try different tactics and fish for different species. Any advice on this stretch would be appreciated. Stay safe all.

Re: Pensham advice

One of our matches there a couple of years back was won with Chub on the waggler,it was a low and clear river though on a sunny day so conditions weren’t ideal but there are plenty of bream down there if you can drop on a shoal of them.

Re: Pensham advice

Cheers Stew. I get the impression the top end may be a bit shallower but it all looks nice.
Stay safe.

I've tried it for barbel a couple of times, but never managed one, although I know they are there. It is pretty deep as you say, apart from the very top end. One time I did fish it, i managed just bream, but also a stray carp, around 8lb or so. It's a nice stretch.

Thanks JC. I fished it for Barbel back in February but not a touch.

Re: Pensham advice

I've fished Pensham a few times and as said it's not so deep at the top end and is probably a better bet for chub.
The further down it gets deeper (9-12 foot) and it does hold a fair few bream.
Personally I always float fish, and my aim is just to catch. Doesn't matter what. As long I get a few fish I'm quite happy. The last time I chucked a pig, was about 30 years ago.
Anyway, I tend to fish a stick float, whether it is a big lignum stick, Avon style or bolo, usually with an olivette about 18" from the hook with a couple of no.8 droppers evenly spread. Line is 3lb Dave Harrell pro match with size 18/20 Kamasan barbless hook.
On average I would catch roach, skimmers and perch (depending on baits used) with the occasional chub or dace. On it's day hemp and tares is prolific.
Providing the river condition is okay I would expect to catch anything around 6-10lbs during a 5 hour session. Not a massive amount I know, but at least I'm catching a fish every few minutes, rather than trying to catch an elusive biggie.
I hope this info is of some use to you on the glorious 16th
