If any pleasure anglers intend fishing venues that can be match fished, especially on Saturdays and Sundays can you do yourselves a favour and check the BAA website to see if your intended venue is booked for a match. Most do have a look, but if you don't, do not complain when you're asked to leave a venue if it's booked for a match because you couldn't be bothered to look, it takes seconds to check on most phones these days.

Re: Pleasure anglers

Ahh Severn Stoke I presume? Bet you were popular with all those 'pleasure anglers'....what a bind they are?

Do you matchmen really think it's a pleasure at the moment? Blanking Barbel is no pleasure I can assure you, which let's face it SS is the Crown Jewels for many on the Severn as far as Barbel are concerned, and the downturn in catches is alarming, not just there but as far up as Kempsey too.

Not everyone has a smart phone or even a computer, the old fashioned sign saying something like Match Booked Sunday 23rd August might be an option?

Oh! and just to illustrate my point No Barbel caught.... sad

Re: Pleasure anglers

It’s been on the website here for weeks that there is a match booked. If you haven’t got internet access then why not ring the office?Again it takes a couple of minutes. We put signs up on arrival to tell any pleasure anglers there was a match on and one of those was ripped down during the match so do you really think they are going to last a week there? Why would you not think to check first what’s booked when you plan on fishing river this time of year, especially on a Sunday?
As for the lack of Barbel, the majority of the blokes on the match were fishing for the Bream and a Barbel turning up would of been a surprise bonus.

Hello Mr onelastcast AKA Neil, I'd have bet my house on you being the first to reply to the post on match bookings.True to form, when people try to put something positive or offer a form of advice on here you just can't help yourself putting a negative slant on anything you don't like. I do feel for you when a club has the gall to book a match on one of your favourite venues. The Severn Stoke match on 23rd August was chosen for the good access to the river, considering the club have many members over the age of 60. Not many anglers on the match fished for barbel, most fished for bream or bleak, they weren't bothered about catching a barbel, they've all caught thousands of them over the years. So " pleasure angler " Neil, when you decide to go " pleasure fishing " next, use that single brain cell you have and check the " match bookings ".

Re: Pleasure anglers

Severn Stoke the jewel in the crown for barbel anglers?Ha ha ha ha since when?I think you will find that is any stretch on the middle Severn Neil where people travel from all over the country to stay weeks at a time to fish for the barbel. You wouldn’t know that though would you as you’re scared to travel above Worcester.Been a steady amount caught on the middle too,I’ve had 6 Barbel to 8lb in 3 evening sessions as well as a fair few Chub, maybe you should update your clearly failing tactics?
As said above nobody in the match was even targeting the Barbel so your ramblings about the lack of them being caught are irrelevant to this discussion.I could pick any of the blokes from our clubs and I can guarantee that they have caught more Barbel over the years than you’ve had hot dinners old chap.Check the middle Severn match results from the 80’s and 90’s if you don’t believe me!

Oh dear.... Onelastcast throws in some bait and Stew cannot resist a bite! I know neither of you, nor really wish to, but your bickering does get rather tiresome. On a serious note, the lack of barbel on the middle Severn is a worry and my anecdotal evidence is that anglers fishing exclusively for barbel are generally disappointed. Combination of predation and frequency of extreme floods? Better anglers than me have their views. Best get out the float gear and fish for anything with fins and regard the odd babel as bonus.

Re: Pleasure anglers

I know barbel are not showing up much at the moment as the rivers aren’t at the best levels but my lad caught 2 last Wednesday at Blackstone and he was just chucking a feeder in hoping for anything that takes his maggots.....to be fair it was late afternoon and they were only small but barbel are barbel.....I think any of you blokes who know more about barbel fishing may have better luck ......and I had a match at Barton a couple of weeks ago an one feller caught one there and he was not in the weir ...... so they are out there if you’re looking for them.....just not in the numbers were use too........

Re: Pleasure anglers

the Lower Severn has just started to pick up a bit. 12 blanks for me, but my last two trips have produced a barbel each time. They're not "on it" just yet, but things are looking up.

The extra water will at least have them on the move anyway.
