Re: Stocking barbel in rivers

I wouldn't have thought it would make sense for an organisation to stock barbel in a river, given how nomadic they can be. If I owned a stretch, don't think I'd stock a load of fish, just for them to bugger off to the stretch downstream...who knows though?

If I remember rightly though, it was the BAA who originally stocked barbel into the Great Ouse when they ran it in the 70's, might be wrong though, often am.

Re: Stocking barbel in rivers

I agree,I don't see the point in a club stocking any species of fish into a river to be honest.Obviousley the ea stock fish on various rivers across the country but for a club to do it would surely be a waste of money. The same would apply for any water a club runs on a canal too,you just can't control where the fish will end up.

Richard Walker has claimed to have caught barbel from the Ouse in the early 50's but I'm only going on what I've read.

Also Bob Church apparently introduced barbel to the Ouse above Bedford in the early 70's.

I searched the the clubs news feeds and thee was a picture of small 2/3 " Barbel being stocked in the upper WA. Couldn't find any in depth reports, but it does seem they have undertaken some stocking.

Re: Stocking barbel in rivers

There has always been Barbel in UK waters, but confined to the eastern Rivers, the Angling Times were the first to introduce Barbel into the Severn in the 50's.

When the British Isles were seperated from the main European Continent the Barbel were isolated into the rivers such as the Thames and Ouse.

Issac Walton often wrote about the Barbel.who predates Bob Church, and even Dick Walker Stewawkward

I was just stating where and when they stocked them....didn't say they were the first to do so.

To be pedantic, you said Bob Church introduced them, he did not, he might have stocked a few, but he didn't introduce them.

Why don't you two -- Stew & OLCast stop your constant childish bickering which is clogging up the site for more interesting comments. In my experience when I posted my concerns about the problems at Uckinghall 2 or 3 years ago OLCast attempted to start arguments then. Some of the things he said then indicated to me that he hadn't been near the place for ages.I would suggest Stew that you just ignore his comments as he is a complete *****ole.

Re: Stocking barbel in rivers

For the interest in stating facts about how Barbel have colonised our rivers it might be worth pointing out a few truths, not for point scoring but as a valuable recognition of how and why they got here. Truth is the Barbel are 'up against' it somewhat and any sort of sound knowledge as to what their natural habitat was is going to help us understand their needs in the future, not that I think too many are interested, especially when I read some comments on here.

Mixer I have not got a clue as to what you are on about as far as Uckinghall is concerned, perhaps you might clarify that one, but to call me an asshole, well that is not called for, so maybe you want to get something off your chest.

I won't stoop to being rude with name calling and the like, if we cant debate without losing the plot then let's not discuss anything if you want, besides if you can't see that I was just having a robust debate with Stew then it's sad situation, I thought us anglers were not so delicate.

Of course opinions will be divided on many things fishing, but please keep it civil.

Well said mixer, totally agree, every time I make a comment he starts,I have said previously that instead of coming back and forth on here which is not what this forum is for,why don't we meet up and discuss his concerns, obviously he declined.

Re: Stocking barbel in rivers

Not one reply have you made arguing or maybe agreeing with the points I have made.
I have said Leamington HAVE stocked Barbel. No comment, which is odd as this was the crux of what the OP was asking, surely that is the point of this thread, not childish name calling.

Surely you are better placed than me to comment on what is a Midlands club? The replies were very much doubting the fact they have stocked Barbel, and you yourself doubted it, so I am saying they HAVE, despite all the reasons 'against'

So in the interest of this thread and the OP surely it might be a good idea to look into this, even though you might be wrong in your views?,

It's not about ego's, so feel free to dig around and see if we can actually find the truth, perhaps someone from Leamington looks in on here?

I can't be arsed to engage in any more pointless arguments with you to be honest,I think everyone can see that mixers description of you is pretty accurate. So everything you said is right and I totally agree with everything you say.

I offered you a chance to actually see if the rumour was correct, as Anglers, and especially someone like yourself I would have thought it might be of interest to dig deeper, but then yet another negative reply Oh well.

I rang a local tackle shop just now , they confirmed they did stock Barbel in 2015 he thinks, as to how many he wasn't sure, but I will find out.
