Hello Fellow D’anglers,
I read in a Sunday Paper, on 21/05/23, a article produced by the Rivers Trust that included a map that they have produced that has really pinpointed the True Scale of the Daily Pollution being discharged into the UK rivers!

It can be accessed as an interactive map online by viewing the River Trust website

theriverstrust.org

In the last 2 days I have used a footbridge over the River Anker in Tamworth, where I was amazed at the quantity of fish that I saw topping all across the river.
Yesterday I visited Shrewsbury, I stood on a footbridge that spans the River Severn, I failed to see a single fish breaking the surface of the river, I was quite amazed by this as there had been a large hatching of “Mayflies”, yet not one fish did I see!!

Only 27 days to go and then we can go to the rivers and

Keep on Fishing…

We have had sewage pumped into our rivers since man built towns and cities, in fact as a kid fishing such rivers as the Bristol Avon in places such as Bath and Bristol the fishing was far better than it is now.

Of course the rivers were polluted, but a bit of muck to put it politely was never a bad thing, in fact the Roach and Bream seemed to thrive on it.

Fast forward to now we have probably by and large 'cleaner' rivers but the added problem of a whole concoction of chemicals either as a result of farming or what we humans use daily.

Combine abstraction predation and loss of habitat this I believe are the real issues.

The thought of trotting down a float in a gin clear river would be unimaginable and probably pointless.

Of course we need to cut the sewage discharges to a minimum, but for me the real problem lies elsewhere.

Hi Reg & OLC

If fish are topping at Tamworth and May Fly are abundant at Shrewsbury, the habitat at both locations seem to be supportive of fish life. The May Fly bloom is of course the same time as our course fish are breeding, while Trout will have spawned earlier in late winter/early spring so that's why they are best situated to take advantage of May Fly when the water temps rise to a critical temp. The Shrewsbury town/city area is a haven for Bream with the Severn there being a deep, slow and navigable section, the calm before the storm in fact which starts lower downstream at Atcham right down to Blackstone with shallower and faster flowing stretches, typical of what we call the Middle Severn and is more likely to support Trout.

I wouldn't worry Reg if the Shrewsbury May Fly were left alone, that could mean that the Bleak, Dace, Roach and Chub were down deep and "at it" too. It's only a theory, nothing is black & white.

As for dirty water OLC, it amazes me when I'm fishing a canal and the silt has been stirred up by passing boats (a perfect scenario for a bite a cast as far as I'm concerned), you get passers by who are totally surprised that there are decent fish to be caught in such dirty water.

Just because its murky doesn't mean that it devoid of life, in fact canal water is probably the most unpolluted water in the region at the moment. No sewage outlets as well as acting as a filter for the Severn/Trent catchment.

I am encouraged by recent water company admissions that they've let things slip but let us not forget that when we were kids, the population of this country was 30% lower than it is now and the older sewage plants had less s*£T to deal with then.

Keep enjoying "being there" with "Nature" and fishing too while you are at it.

Keep your eyes and mind open and if folk stop and ask you what you are catching rather than staring at their phone and passing you by, show some enthusiasm and TEACH what you've leaned while practicing your Art of Angling. I love putting a smile on folk's faces and it always puts a smile on my own miserable fizzogsmiling
