Looking at all the fabulous pictures being posted do you think we will soon be seeing 15lb plus barbel from the upper Severn.

Re: Upper Severn barbel

I'd be surprised, but who knows? Not nearly as much bait goes in up there as the middle and Lower reaches of the river, so any double figure fish up there is quite something, and I take my hat off to anyone that captures one. It's really only recently that 15's are more common on the Lower, and that's only on certain stretches where bait gets piled in causing certain fish to balloon each season. The Severn is also a cold river, certainly more so in its upper reaches. That all said, less fish/bigger fish seems to be the way most rivers are going, so time will tell.

Re: Upper Severn barbel

In answer to your question Rob. Yes it is possible that a 15lb fish has already been caught from the middle Severn. People assume that if such a fish were to be caught,It would be reported on social media and then what happens some people try and track down where this fish was caught.
So from past experience they prefere to keep things private and not report such a fish if and when it was caught

Not everbody posts trophy pictures of barbel they have caught on social media and prefere to keep things to them selves becuase they know what happens when people find out where and when a fish was caught?

The middle first did 15's more than 10/12 years ago. This post is about the Upper river, not the middle. As i've already stated, it is VERY different up there to the middle. Nowhere near the amount of bait goes in compared to below Shrewsbury. Couple that with what essentially is a comparitively cold river, and it's questionable whether a barbel could attain a weight of 15lb.

Re: Upper Severn barbel

I think the theory of less fish/bigger fish is relevant I used to fish pool quay and forden all the time for years before there was any barbel and we used to catch some massive chub but now double figure fish are showing on a regular basis in what seems a relatively short time

Re: Upper Severn barbel

not the 15lb your talking about but a good story anyhow.......my brother caught one last year that was just short of 12lb. lovely fish in great condition too .....very lucky to get it out as he was catching silvers on a stick float 3 lb main and 2.6 bottom. 18 hook ...just a lucky one off really .... that was at Bicton....but like jonny said its not ideal up there for bigger fish but you never know , one day maybe......

Re: Upper Severn barbel - waiting to be caught - contact Mike Wood the Bailiff

Hi Rob
In going back through the Pictures of the Week

There are some really large Barbel that have already been caught from the Upper Severn as the image below shows.

To make the best of any visit to the Upper Severn then make contact with the Bailiff Mike Wood or his Wife, Ann, who know the River better than anyone.

The note that accompanied the photo from Ann Wood the Bailiff who said the Barbel was just shy of 15lb!

Keep on Fishing

What a cracking fish, like I said earlier we used to catch some big chub up there so it doesn’t surprise me anymore that fish of that size are there if you can find them.

Re: Upper Severn barbel - Forden Barbel from 2018 caught by a Salmon Fisherman

Hi Rob,
The attached photo of a + 14lb Barbel was caught on the Forden stretch in 2018 by a Salmon fisherman!

What a fish!

As I have previously mentioned the Bailiffs for the Upper Severn, Mike and Ann Wood, produce a monthly summary of the fishing that has been experienced between Aberbechan and Underdale.
They are to be found in the Archives and are well worth a read.

Keep on Fishing

Re: Upper Severn barbel

I know of several 14lb fish that have come out around the CREW GREEN / LLANDRINIO area, so 15lb fish are a real possibility.
I've seen 4 huge fish together at POOL QUAY which at fist I thought were salmon but were defiantly barbel. Was hard to judge size but I'd say each fish was over 12lb

Re: Upper Severn barbel

I had to laugh at the idea that no big barbel can be present because no bait goes in......lol......The river is teeming with natural baits. I've seen fresh water swan mussels bigger that a saucer. I use 2 shells as ashtrays on my patio table.
