Twaite Shad caught at Stacklands

Whilst salmon fly fishing on Monday - I think it is a Twaite shad - caught by accident. It fought pretty hard even on a heavy salmon rod - leaping clean out of the river. By all accounts this is a pretty big Twaite shad - the record is only about 2 lb something.
Was released safely - you aren't allowed to target them apparently as they are protected - the Wye is one of the few rivers where they still spawn. Never seen one before - looked just like a big herring.
The only action we saw all day - no salmon showing at all.

Re: Twaite Shad caught at Stacklands

That's a big Shad. I have had one from Stacklands on maggot a few season a ago, I actually monitor numbers on the Sevrrn at Tewkesbury weir for the Severn Rivers Trust. They were once common in the Severn, but with weirs blocking their way to their spawning grounds they are under threat. They are a big feature in the Teme too, and were the cause of heated debate regarding the removal of Powick weir. But if the Shad benefit so will the Barbel.

I caught one once in a match at Upton in the early 90's, only small though. Biggest one I've seen was also in a match at Kempsey when the BAA had it around the same time, that one was decent, around 2lb or so. I remember, none of knew what it was at the time. I've not seen one since.

I caught one at Upton about 3 years ago. Nowhere near that size it was about 6 inches long ....on a stick float .....to be fair though I was allowed to weigh it in because nobody knew what it was ......I’ve never seen one before or since.........
