Re: Declining junior angling

How about connecting up with scouts and guides groups and offering support for the Angler Activity Badge? Most scout leaders probably don't go fishing, so the association could provide speakers at meetings or organise fishing events that kids could earn their badge at.

Severn Roach!

I managed to get back to fishing for the first time in 2017 and had two sessions this week on the Severn at Coomby's Farm at Kinlet (Stanley Water) and on the Eardington Brook downstream section.

Only two smallish barbel, but lots of chub at Eardington.

At Kinlet I had a few chub and one barbel but ... 9 roach for 6.2 kgs (13 lbs 10 oz).

Two were 0.90 kgs (2 lbs) topped by this clunker of 1.20 kgs (2 lbs 10 oz).

They are now taking 8 mm pellets, so should be stacking on the weight this season.

Maybe a 3 pounder this year?

Walcot lake looks very sick

I've fished Walcot a few times with a good friend Graeme, usually on a fine summer evening looking for big tench.

In three visits in the last three years, I've caught two small rudd and no tench, Graeme has had one on and lost it (possibly a carp).

In July this year I had the pleasure of staying in the Garden House at Walcot Hall, complete with use of the rowing boats on the BAA lake.

On a still day with polaroids on, I rowed the lake for a couple of hours. No-one fishing, but two swims had been raked between the trees opposite the boat house island.

The water was gin clear and still, meaning I could see to the bottom for at least 20 metres away from the boat in each direction.

In 3 hours, I saw 5 fish. One 4 oz pike in the margins, 2 cruising carp at 10 lbs plus, and 2 very old sick-looking bream, probably about 4-5 lbs, I could get close enough to touch them before they moved off slowly. Nothing topping anywhere, even into the evening.

Much of the lake is now less than 1 ft deep, with 3-4 feet of thick, yellow silt on the bottom and is almost entirely weeded to the surface.

The deepest sections, only around 3 ft, were equally weeded with no sign of fish.

There are loads of snails on the weed and silt, and a fair number of freshwater mussels on the bottom.

All in all, the water looked barren and very sickly, much in need of some attention.

Last day barbel

Managed a quick 3 hours on the last day of the season at Kinlet, bright sunshine, so not very hopeful.

Very happy to get 3 bites resulting in 3 barbel of 2.8 (6lb-3oz) , 3.8 (8lb-6oz) and topped by 4.7 kgs (10lb-5oz).
