Re: River Close Season

Hi again Onelastcast.

Thank you for your detailed response.

I should start by saying that I am actually not looking for a "loop hole" as you put it and my initial "tongue in cheek" comment about trundling a worm down Arley were obviously lost on yourself. The initial post was inspired by the fact that someone was fishing alongside their car at Ribbesford and I wondered if this was a common event on the rivers. And yes, I am a fully paid up member of BAA even though for the last 20 years I have lived on the South Coast and only got to fish the club waters for two weeks a year (also having to tidy up every peg I fished first).

I like your play on words also about the "can of worms". I should add though that I do not believe that the EA would consider the rule as a "loop hole" and probably not be happy about the inference either. I am sure they would simply look at it as a Local Bye Law. As I said earlier, apart from fly fishing, I have never fished running water (rivers) in the Close Season in my life and never will. I fully support and respect the Close Season. Can you say the same ?

I don't understand your comment about me getting back into the sport. I started when I was 4 years old and have never stopped fishing since then. Thank you for the offer of checking out the Barbel Fishing World Forum. Unfortunately I have checked it out before and will not be checking it out again. There are too many individuals on the forum who take things said the wrong way and who fly off on tangents that have no connection with original posts. I also prefer to use my local tackle shop for my gear as if everyone uses online forums for their tackle (like eBay for instance) you will eventually lose your local outlets. Where will you get your maggots then, Amazon, eBay, Gumtree ? I suppose you could breed your own.

Again, thank you for your detailed comments, but unfortunately will not be returning to this Forum again so will not get to see any further responses. As I said previously, I don't go on the internet much at all, even less now. I prefer to spend my spare time messing with my fishing gear and out on the bank.

Tight lines and thanks again.

Re: River Close Season

Hi Guys.
Thanks for the reply onelastcast. As you may appreciate, my initial question was posted immediately after being told that someone was having a quiet day's fishing at Ribbesford. Hopefully members don't think I am just lazy for not looking into the facts myself as I thought that this subject may well have been discussed previously on numerous occasions. Maybe I was wrong.

Nevertheless, I did move my backside and have a look into it and the BAA Bye Laws and Regulations booklet does state at C1 that "Members shall observe the Close Season for fishing in rivers as laid down in the Bye Laws of the Environment Agency".

Our area is covered by the Local Rod Fishing Bye Laws for the Severn and Trent Catchment.

Page 7 of the Document does state that you can fish for Eels with a rod and line throughout the year apart from on some designated SSSI's. It also states that where the Close Season does apply you may fish for eels provided you do not use a hook with a gape of less than half an inch (a Size 6 T6 Raptor should suffice) and that you use either artificial or natural fly, spinners, minnows, worms, prawns or shrimps as bait. I also think you are allowed to use sand eels as well, I may be wrong though.

So therefore, if I trundle a large lobworm down the River at Arley on a hook with a gape larger than half inch with the aim of catching a big eel, I assume i'm complying with both the Local Severn and Trent Bye Laws and also BAA Rules.

Could someone please tell me (particularly onelastcast with all due respect) then why would I then leave myself liable for a "hefty fine".

Nevertheless, I have to say that I have never fished a river in the Close Season apart from with a fly and have no intention of doing so in the future. I fully support the Close Season on running water. I simply asked the question because my daughter saw someone fishing at Ribbesford.

To that end it would be nice if an opinion on this could be put forward by someone with knowledge of the subject. I understand that there may be one or two EA Bailiffs who are also members of the Club. After all it is EA Legislation (and Local Bye Laws of course).

I'm now off to Nordley. Tight Lines boys and thanks for all the interest.

River Close Season

Hello Guys.
As you can see, I don't tend to use the internet much .... Nevertheless, just been round to see my daughter in Stourport and was told that on her way to Bewdley this morning with her friend she saw a car parked adjacent to the Ribbesford stretch of the Severn and someone was fishing near to the vehicle. Am I right in saying that you are in fact allowed to fish the river in the Close Season provided that you fish without a float, with a hook above a particular size and without what you would generally term an "open season bait", in other words something like a lobworm. If this is the case, do many of the members actually do this ? Am I OK to do this ? My apologies for the lack of knowledge on this subject but as far as river fishing goes, my river tackle has always been mothballed for this period. Got to say, I wouldn't mind trundling a large lobworm down the river on some sturdy tackle, particularly up at Arley.

Cheers guys. The 16th is nearly upon us ! Tight lines smiling

Re: What actually are the rules ?

Hi guys. Some great comments there. It would also be a bonus if we got something constructive and forward thinking from one or more committee members, maybe regarding/including ;

1. An odd extra 2 person peg created for couples who like to fish together, particularly for couples who both can't swim (the wife);
2. One or two "paid" bailiffs, paid for with the night fishing permit monies, even if only part time ;
3. A midnight permit at a reduced cost (say £5) ;
4. A membership referendum on whether night fishing permits should be abolished and the cost of yearly membership increased accordingly if the bank balance is really the issue (or would this be too democratic for the club to consider ?).

On a final note, we drove over Holt Fleet bridge late last night and it reminded me of my younger days in Blackpool !! Think I might take a leaf out of Lee's book and look for a syndicate that allows night fishing as being an old codger, my poultry pension will definitely not stretch to BAA night permit prices.

Take care guys and happy fishing.

What actually are the rules ?

Hi all.

Although myself and my wife have been members of BAA for a number of years now, this will be my first post smiling

We have been fishing the BAA stretches of the River Severn now for many years and apart from having to clear almost every swim of rubbish and night fishing detritus before fishing, we have enjoyed every session whether we caught or not.

We do generally go the full distance right up until dusk and always leave the bank while we can still see our rod tips. Nevertheless, on returning to the car after most sessions, without fail we see a plethora of starlights and isotopes with anglers looking like they are absolutely geared up for the night. I am by the way talking about stretches where night fishing is definitely not allowed.

Could someone please give me a definitive answer to this one as everybody seems to be singing from different hymn books. If it really is a "dusk" thing does this also mean that we have to leave the bank in the winter just as the schools are letting out. Please, what are the actual rules on this one ?

On a final note I do feel that we should do our best as a club to relax the night fishing rules (where landowners agree) to club members on the proviso that everyone makes the effort to ensure that everyone fishing on the night are club members, therefore hopefully reducing the poaching and rubbish problem. If not, does anyone else feel that for an actual paid up club member £10 a night is a bit excessive and why not consider a reduced cost to fish until midnight, for old codgers like me and the wife who can't really keep their eyes open much past midnight.

Sorry to rant a bit but myself and my wife are getting really frustrated leaving the bank at the witching hour just as everyone else is turning up. By the way we have found that Quatford is the worst location for this.

Kind regards and tight lines to all rule abiding members.

Pete and Gay (the wife).
