Re: Fly Fishing BAA Waters

Thanks - very helpful advice. You'll know me if you see me fly fishing the Teme - I'll be the one trying to get my fly out of the trees!

Re: Fly Fishing BAA Waters

I am up for a bit of fly fishing on the Teme near Tenbury maybe this weekend but despite having just bought a suitable 8ft AFTM 4/5 rod and DT4 line I am still a little bemused as to what flies to try, being mainly a reservoir fly fisher. I suppose dries or maybe some nymphs Czech style.
I'd welcome some help from someone who knows the river and can at least suggest a few patterns to try. Last time I fished last June they were avoiding the Duns and taking something else, but couldn't work out what, maybe midges. Would be good to catch a grayling as well. Any tips welcome.
And if you know how to fish it properly maybe I could tag along to pick up some tips.

Re: Keys Left @ Retreat Farm Pools

I fished it on Sunday - also saw the keys and was puzzled why they were there - they were gone by the time I packed up.
I had a couple of mirrors from pool 1 as well. I also fished pool 2 briefly but didn't have any confidence - the water didn't look right to me. Lots of floating dark silk weed like you see in polluted rivers. I can't believe the crucians have gone in this pool - think they should gone in pool 1 as this water looks much healthier. Either that or Uckinghall but let's not start that thread again.

Re: Beginning Fishing

I think the advice to try to learn the basics on a Stillwater is good advice - you've got to have your casting skills sorted and know how to play a fish on light gear. I consider myself pretty competent on still waters - I fish Draycote and catch some nice fish, I've been fly fishing on still waters for 35 years but when I tried the Teme last year I really struggled. Main challenges were knowing which fly to use, my reservoir gear was too heavy and clumsy, and ability to present the fly naturally in the flow was a whole new level of skill. It was really challenging but I can see that it would be really rewarding when you land a fish. I had a couple of rises from about 100 casts. I was in the river with chest waders - there was no way you could cast from the banks - too overgrown. As it was I spent half my time recovering my flies from trees. But being in the water during the close season was really fun and I was learning by trial and error - just need to buddy up with someone who knows what they are doing. I'll try again in May when the Mayflies as hatching - 'duffers fortnight' might see me land a fish. Strangely though there were plenty of Duns hatching (see attached) but they weren't taking them. So if anyone has some tips on fly patterns - dries and nymphs - to use on the Teme in May, that would be very much appreciated.

Re: Uckinghall - dodgy banks - I fell in!!

We all take some risks whenever we go near water and it pays to try to be sensible but hurdles like brambles hanging from trees can catch us out cos they don't snap easily and bloody hurt when you get one round your face, as I did. Hopefully the working party will be doing something there when they start again, but I'll try and attack them myself next time before I set off.
Won't be a few weeks though as I haven't had a nibble there for four trips now, so will be seeking the toothy fish elsewhere for a while.
