Re: Staffs. / Worcs. Canal - Bridge 40 Swindon High Street to Bridge 39 Hinksford

The community hall car park is now left open so that visitors to Swindon can use it to park their cars!
Saw notice near canal gate two weeks ago!

Re: Salford priors track

Flattening out ruts does not work long term!

The best and cheapest way to solve this problem, is, as I have said before, FILL THE RUTS WITH RUBBLE!

Only a fool would waste material spreading all across a track where a vehicles wheels never go.

Just in the tracks will do the job just fine.

Are electric gates always needed???????

I don't think so!

After giving it a bit of thought, I believe it is not always necessary to have an electric gate in conjunction with protection against otters.

There needs to be a main gate for working party vehicle access.
This could be an ordinary farm gate with 3 inch weld-mesh attached. (reduced from 4 inch)
A strong chain and key operated lock would be my choice for security.
It obviously should have tight tolerances on both the bottom and sides to keep animals out.
With a base of concrete or slabs, about 3 feet wide directly under the gate for the whole length to protect against animal diggers or ruts from vehicles.

For anglers access a large round sided kissing gate with a bias after use, to always move towards the latch.
As an extra precaution it could be weighted to pull it shut.
Again, as with the large gate, 3 inch weld-mesh would be attached and tight tolerances between the ground and the front edge of the gate and the sides would be needed.
Also a concrete base or slabs below the gate would protect against wear and tear.

Done this way it could only be in the open state by an act of vandalism.

Motion detection camaras could be the answer if this became a problem.

Even if an electric gate was the chosen option, costs could be kept down by only having the anglers small access gate electrified.

PS. Of course a combo lock on the access gate could be used as added security!

Re: Otter fencing!

A fence, is a fence, is a fence, designed to keep people or animals either in or out.

Ben at Monkhall may have done his otter barrier this same way or gone down a different route.
If he has done it differently, he may see this and think that he could of saved a shedload of money.

Who knows?

What I do know is, no fishery owner in their right mind, would spend a penny more than they have to, to protect their fish stocks from otters.
