New Licence

Had an email a few weeks back from the EA concerning price increases and changes. As I read it you can buy a licence on any date and it will be valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. It also mentioned a coarse & trout would cover 3 rods, not 2. The price rise was nominal. People I have talked to think likewise. A friend, Saturday, asked me how much a concessionary coarse & trout was, I googled it and got the following table. I myself buy a Salmon licence as I fish in Wales a lot and can confirm the £54 concessionary as what I paid. This is the first time I have come across a two tier system, 2 rods or 3 at different prices. See table below from

http://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences/buy-a-fishing-licence...

Prices for licences that start after 1 April 2017

Licence type Trout and coarse 2-rod Trout and coarse 3-rod Salmon and sea trout
1-day £6 Not available £12
8-day £12 Not available £27
12-month £30 £45 £82
12-month over 65 or disabled £20 £30 £54

12-month junior (12 to 16) Free Free Free

Did I miss something in the earlier email ?? (Sorry about how the spacing appears)

Re: Fly fishing during closed season

Hi "onelastcast". The minimum hook size applies to Eel fishing on rivers during the coarse fish close season. The relevant sections are:

When and where can I fish for eels?
You can fish for eels with rod and line in most fisheries throughout the year - the only exception is during the coarse fish close season on designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) listed in table 1 below..
Where the coarse fish close season applies you may fish for eels provided you do not use a hook with a gape of less than 0.5 inches (12.7mm) and use either artificial or natural fly (which term excludes bloodworms, jokers and other midge larvae), spinners, minnows, worms, prawns or shrimps as bait. You may keep eel in a keepnet or keep sack but you must return them to the
water. This is a regional byelaw.

When can I fish for trout?
The close season for brown trout and rainbow trout in rivers, and for brown trout in unenclosed
stillwaters, is the period from 8th. October to 17th.March inclusive. This is a regional byelaw.
There is no close season for brown trout in enclosed stillwaters (enclosed stillwaters are those
from, and to, which fish cannot swim) and rainbow trout in all stillwaters. These are national
byelaws

The full bye laws (Severn Trent) are shown at http://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data...

And for NRW (Wales)

Re: Fly fishing during closed season

Hi KenL, Well spotted !! By "Trout Licence" I do of course mean Coarse & Trout. I have just rechecked the EA rules and I believe you are correct. I must have read these a dozen times, don`t know why I had it in my head about no spinning. The relevant section is:

Where the coarse fish close season applies (see above) and you are fishing for other species you
must not use any float or bait (which term includes ground bait) other than artificial or natural fly
(which term excludes bloodworms, jokers and other midge larvae), spinners, minnows, worms,
prawns or shrimps. This is a regional byelaw.

Re: Fly fishing during closed season

During the coarse fish close season you can fly fish and worm (using appropriate tackle) for Trout and Fly and spin for Salmon (Salmon licence needed). You can`t spin on a Trout licence. With regards Trout it must be reasonable to assume they are present in the stretch you are fishing. If worming acquaint yourself with the EA rules. A friend was challenged some years ago on the Teme, a club baliff and then the BAA claimed his hook (size 8) was too small !! They were confusing this with the hook size for Eel fishing on rivers during this period (minimum 1/2" gape). There was quite a rumpus until they finally checked with the EA. You will be OK on say the Teme where the Trout are prolific.
