Pershore Barbel

A great afternoon on the Avon Thursday 28th Oct. Carrying a little extra water encouraged the Barbel to feed. 3 fish between 7.5lb and 8.5lb plus a near 5lb Bream. Lost 2 very big fish due to a fallen tree branch in the water on the nearside. Started on waggler across but this didn't work. Went on a simple feeder set up, same line and never waited long for a bite. Had to stop when the light faded and rain moved in.

Re: Try to do do the right thing!

Great result mate. I fished Pershore in the week. A peg below the boatyard stretch. So glad I had tares with me. Bitten out by bleak on traditional baits. Had a good net of chub and dace by pole fishing into mid river.

Mini 20 AC Pershore R/B 12/09/20

1.K. Jones 11lb 5oz
2.M. Imrie 7lb 11oz
3.M.Lacey 7lb 5oz

A warm day with plenty of sunshine on a clear river. Winning peg was down opposite the Pensham fence. A 5AAA DH truncheon Waggler across caught lots of small chub and roach with caster and tares scoring best. The boatyard section did not fish as well as it might. No big fish were caught but a great day to be on the river. 9 of us fishing.

Re: Harris's peg

I've recently been reading The National Angling Championships, a book by John Essex. It says that Harris used an Avon type float in a turbulent swim with a 3 x AAA bulk and 2 x BB down above the hook. Feeding maggot and caster his catch was made up of Barbel, Chub and Dace. It was only his 2nd visit to the Severn and he had previously only ever caught 1 Barbel. Leicester won the team match, captained by the great Ivan Marks with the brilliant Clive Smith's BAA in 2nd place. Known as the Barbel National due to The Angling Times stocking of the fish some years earlier.
