Re: Stacklands

Eels are great news. The otters love them, which means they leave the other fish alone.

Re: Stacklands

It happens unfortunately. Low Oxygen levels in the river are making the problem worse thus the recommendation to recover the fish even longer than usual. There are lots and lots of debates about the closed season. My preference would for it to be between May and August, the fish are at their most vulnerable during these months and rarely spawning in cold water in March and April.

Re: Stacklands

Hi Wozey1

I'm the bailiff for Stacklands. Fishing the Wye at the moment is a challenge, we have a big pollution issue and an algae bloom currently clouding the water. The weed mentioned in previous posts has failed to grow meaning less cover and less natural food. My recommendation would be to fish between 5am and 9am and 5pm and 9pm and I'm sure I don't need to remind you about recovering the fish, if you are lucky enough to catch one, rest it in the flow until its ready, then rest it for a further 5 mins at least before releasing it, we found lots of dead barbel last summer as a result of them not being rested properly after a hard fight.. During the day there are far too many canoes, its too bright and too warm. September through to end of October is our time to shine! More than happy to give you some hints and tips and put you on the fish, I'll give you one now, the Croys look inviting in terms of easy of fishing, you'll have a very relaxing day however, with not much action. Because of the obvious issues with work parties the fishery is overgrown at the moment so you are going to need a bit of jungle warfare to get to a swim, please dont cut any branches down or dig out banks though please. As mentioned Mr. Williams is very strict on where to park, please only park in the designated area, if this is full park outside the fishery. There are Roadworks planned for the end of the month into the start of June where the lane will be closed and the fishery inaccessible, a notice will be put on the website with the dates.

Re: The Wye

Above my pay grade that decision!

As it stands both Hereford District Angling Association and Ross Anglers water are still open.

BAA took a lead from both of those clubs in terms of shutting the river during the heatwave in 2018.

The rain has help a little, just exercise some caution.

The Wye

Looking forward to seeing some of you on the bank at a Stacklands next week.

You should be aware that the river is in very bad shape. An algae bloom has covered everything from Builth to Chepstow, oxygen levels are very low as is the river itself.

I would highly recommend washing all kit after fishing and keeping hand sanitizer handy. If you are lucky enough to catch anything try and get it back into the water as quickly as possible and take your time to rest and recover fish.
