Hi all

If you are a fan of fishing the BAA's section of the River Stour at Stourton (aka The Stewpony) I have been informed that work has been started on installing a Salmon Run at the weir.
Also a mate of mine (Graeme the bike) has recently caught several chub up to 3lb from Smestow Brook at Greenforge when its been flooded. Smestow brook (a smaller river than the Stour and only @ 4mts wide) joins the Stour at the top end of our BAA stretch..
Looking good for a change, ay?smiling

Hi Stew,
I too have bumped into 'the chap on the bike'. A great source of info.
I spent a good length of time talking to him and he mentioned the fish to be found in Smestow brook. He may have mentioned a few carp in there, as a lot of the pools around that area are linked to the brook. An interesting informative chap. He has quite a collection of centrepins which he uses.

Hi Dave

Yes, I've learned a lot talking to Graeme over the last couple of years, but its more likely that the carp stocks originated in the Stourbridge Canal which has breached into the Stour twice in the last 40 yrs, a couple of miles upstream of where the Smestow joins forces with the Stour.
The first occasion was back in the '80s when the aqueduct carrying the canal over the Stour at Wordsley Basin gave way, spilling fish, including carp and skimmers, into the Stour below.
I fished a largish weir pool below Kinver a few years later and my catch included a couple of common carp of about 12oz. Since then those same carp have become double figure fish and live in the weir pool alongside double figure barbel which have migrated up the Stour as far as the weir at Stourton now.
Less than 10 yrs ago there was a second spillage of fish from the canal into the Stour not far from the first one. This time the steep bank separating the canal from the river collapsed. The fish then would have include some decent sized chub.
Offspring of the '80s skimmers that were washed into the river are still caught to this day along the BAA's Stourton section, mostly a few hundred meters above the weir in the slower water.
Happy days. It was always a boyhood dream of mine to see fish in the Stour again, it was so polluted back in the '50s and '60s when I was a kid, and I'm chuffed that my dream came true and I'm doubly chuffed that the BAA own the rights to an easily fishable section of it.smiling

Hi Stew,

I have only just seen your post. Most interesting where the fish have appeared from and adapted from canal to river.
Always enjoy your posts.
