I am hoping to fish some canals this year, can anyone tell me any decent BAA venues in the Kidderminster/Bewdley area?

Re: Canals

Never fished that area but had a look on the internet and the Stewpony stretch bridges 33 - 34 seems to pop up and apparently fishes well. Parking in a lay-by close by as well so it seems. I like canals but parking is a nightmare. hope this helps, might be worth a reccy first to see what it's like. Best of luck.

Re: Canals

Seem to remember some of the canal in Kidderminster was decent also - around the Lisle Avenue area - bridge no. 11. Some good chub to be had.

Though it's years since I fished there, it could be completely different now.

Re: Canals

Hi - used to fish canals regularly and stretch in town centre in Kidderminster is as good as anywhere in winter. Anywhere from Sainsbury's downstream towards southern edge of town, as far as Falling Sands Lock used to produce. One flyer section was "The Slings" - slightly wider section, just outside what is now Tescos - used to fish caster and chopped worm down track for some real quality roach and chub - had plenty of double figure bags, even in winter. Haven't fished for a few years, and area has very few people fishing now, but bet that fish are still there, although caster fishing can be a problem if no bait going and fish not used to them. As with all shallow canals, temperature is crucial and cold wind or frosty night can kill it dead. Give it a go if we get a couple of mild days. Good Luck

Re: Canals

Yes, I can recommend the Staffs Worcester canal between Stourport and Kidderminster.

I have only fished occasionally the last two winters but prior to that I was a regular when the rivers were flooded.

I seem to catch fish more or less wherever I set up, you usually have to wait only minutes for your first bite. Usual methods are caster with breadpunch working well when it's cold and hard, chopped worm is a good fall-back also. Main species are roach, dace and perch, with good chub wherever there is cover. Gudgeon used to be plentiful but are only occasional now, rudd and bleak sometimes add to the variety. Carp and bream are also present but are rarely caught.

In winter there is no need usually to fish tight under the far bank which seems to be the default for many canal anglers, just find the deepest part of the canal, usually just on the towpath side of the middle, and fish just where the bottom starts to shelve up towards the other bank. Whether fishing caster or punch you need to feed only lightly. Put a couple of decent cups of feed at the start, then as soon as you start to get bites, just pop four or five casters over your float every drop in. With punch, just feed as soon as bites dry up.

Most times you can catch between 2 and 5lbs of fish in a 2-3 hour session but my best bag was 24lbs in 2.5 hours - mostly chub to 5lbs.

Good access points are at the Lock Inn at Wolverley; by the Watermill pub just off the A451; Lisle Avenue, Oldington Lane, Bullock Lane (near the recycling centre). St Johns' Lane; the Bird in Hand pub; and the Gilgal in Stourport (park in Mitton Place car park pay and display).

I have fished occasionally upstream at Swindon and Hinksford and it tends to be a bit harder up there, it gets fished more including matches. There are more bream up there and gudgeon are more plentiful.

Go fish it, you will hardly ever fail, I have only blanked once in eighteen years fishing, though there have been some near misses. Even had fish when it's been mostly frozen!

Enjoy!

Re: Canals

It’s a little bit further up but there’s some cracking chub pegs at botteram between the short pound and the pipe at the end of the stretch.Park on the bridge just before the green man pub.
